Soldiers have to wait another year to get their hands on the Army’s futuristic new goggles

It appears soldiers will have to wait a few more months before getting issued the Army’s new heads-up display.

The Army has delayed its scheduled fielding date for the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS), the game-changing goggles Microsoft developed for the service based on the company’s HoloLens technology.

While the futuristic goggles were expected to be fielded to soldiers this year, the Army office charged with overseeing the project, Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier, announced on Thursday that the first unit would not be equipped with them until next September.

A delay in the IVAS timeline was first reported by Janes on Wednesday.

“The Army decided to shift the IVAS Operational Test and fielding to a date later in FY22,” reads the press release from PEO Soldier. “The Army is fully committed to its partnership with Microsoft to advance specific technologies to meet operational requirements and maximize warfighter impact.”

The Army awarded Microsoft a 10-year contract in April for the production and rapid fielding of the IVAS, which has been a hugely anticipated element of the Army’s recent modernization push.

The goggles are primarily designed to help soldiers see through smoke and almost complete darkness, provide a three-dimensional map of the battlefield and rapid target acquisition, and even translate foreign languages. At Fort Benning, Georgia, last year, the IVAS was used to “rapidly assess” incoming soldiers’ temperatures amid the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The digital thermal sensors helped take the temperatures of recruits arriving at Fort Benning for basic training.

The IVAS can also drastically improve situational awareness by syncing up with vehicle sensors to give soldiers inside the vehicle a view of what’s waiting for them on the outside

This is an intermediate step in the digitization of the battlefield.

These googles give enormous advantages for soldier, and particularly, those controlling/commanding them, to understand what is going on around them, on the battlefield and of their own troops...

Knowing Google, the delivery will be a bit late as they need to run the specs by China and Russia, first.

Talleyban were given these by Milley and his Pentagram.

We’re going to have to get them from China, so, of course, they’ll be late.

Getting commanders used to micromanaging their automatons/robots.

But on the plus side, this stuff will actually NEVER be in the hands of more than a couple thousand troops, at BEST - and then only for training. God only knows how fast they’d all be broken, lost, or hacked into game systems, or all three.

Can’t they just ask the Taliban to give them back?

In theory, yes. However, as the military becomes more politicized it will also become more intensely micromanaged, and I see the potential for an info-glut actually leading to delayed decisions while the info is processed and evaluated.

Given the highly restrictive ROE we've seen our soldiers operating under in recent years, coupled with the fact that company, battalion and brigade commanders will pretty much be able to see what each soldier is doing in real time, I think many leaders are going to be unable to resist the temptation to direct individual soldiers when careers are on the line.

Captain Alexander, why did Private Snodgrass fire on the target on the right instead of the one the left? Why is Corporal Jones’ canteen only half full?

This equipment has not been fielded, so it is unlikely any were left for the Taliban.

Well, sir, what you call the target on the right is actually our allied unit. Are you ordering me to fire on allied troops?

As far as Corporal Jones canteen being half full, last I checked a canteen is a storage device for water and the Corporal was thirsty.

Anything else, sir?
