White House asks U.S. oil-and-gas companies to help lower fuel costs

The White House has been speaking with U.S. oil and gas producers in recent days about helping to bring down rising fuel costs, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

Energy costs are rising worldwide, in some cases leading to shortages in major economies like China and India. In the United States, the average retail cost of a gallon of gas is at a seven-year high, and winter fuel costs are expected to surge, according to the U.S. Energy Department. Oil-and-gas production remains below the nation’s peak reached in 2019.

“We are closely monitoring the cost of oil and the cost of gas Americans are paying at the pump. And we are using every tool at our disposal to address anti-competitive practices in U.S. and global energy markets to ensure reliable and stable energy markets,” a White House official said.

Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday that she is not aware of any contact with oil and gas companies “around this particular issue.”

U.S. crude oil recently hit $80 a barrel for the first time in seven years, as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and their allies known as OPEC+ restrict output. The White House has discussed rising prices with top OPEC producer Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

The average retail price of a gallon of gasoline has risen to $3.29, according to AAA figures. The U.S. Energy Department said on Wednesday that household heating costs are expected to rise dramatically this winter for all fuels, but particularly for heating oil and propane. [nL1N2R916Z]

U.S. oil production has been slow to rebound from 2020, when output dropped during the coronavirus outbreak.

WSJ Editorial Sep 5 2021 Biden’s Energy Price Shock: His policies are already contributing to global oil supply shortages.

"On Monday energy companies scrapped a 116-mile pipeline to deliver gas from Pennsylvania to New Jersey due to regulatory obstructions. Pipeline blockades by Democratic states in the Northeast have depressed gas prices and investment in the Marcellus shale in Pennsylvania. One ironic result is that, with gas in short supply, New York and New Jersey may wind up burning more oil for electricity this winter.

Meantime, permits issued by the Interior Department for drilling on federal land declined to 171 in August from 671 in April. Democrats’ $3.5 trillion-plus spending bill includes royalty and fee increases that would make U.S. oil and gas producers globally uncompetitive. Less U.S. production will make global oil and gas prices higher for longer than necessary."

Maybe open ANWR back up, or build a pipeline from Canada, or promote more fracking.

Maybe they could start by not taxing the sh** out of the gas at the pump! These companies make a minimal amount of money compared to the state and the fed.

How can Energy Companies lower prices, as supply decreases and production costs are artificially increased? By losing money, and going out of business! This is about as in depth as any energy policy thinking goes in the Biden Administration, which is to say, stupid.

They just cannot stop lying can they? The 16 anti domestic fuel production EOs Bugout Biden signed on his 1st day had nothing at all to do with it apparently

Go, Brandon, Go! Who needs profits? Just cut prices with those high costs and guess what you'll soon have? Lots of out of work petroleum workers, both vaxxed and unvaxxed.

Brandon needs to consult with AOC on economic matters. She'll sort this out in no time.

Most of gas price is rape/tax, but instead of fixing that gas co needs to lower their already slim margin.

LET'S GO BRANDON!

Good God! how dumb do they think we are? It was biden's cuts to pipelines, production and exploration that did this. And it's not a problem you fix overnight. It takes time to increase production and supply lines. Too late for this winter. It will be painful, nothing can stop that now.
