Oregon changes guidelines for substitute teachers to combat shortage

ESTACADA, Ore. — In December of 2019 there were more than 8,000 substitute teachers in Oregon. Now that number is just under 5,000.

In response, the state Teacher Standards and Practices Commission filed a temporary order to establish emergency substitute teacher licenses.

Under this order, the only requirements are for candidates to be 18 years of age and older and undergo a background check.

That's getting a mixed response from parents.

Districts will be expected to pay for these emergency licenses, certify specific administrators to support these candidates, and supervise the performance of these substitutes.

The communications director with the Estacada School District said there will still be standards.

“We will still have safe, trustworthy adults in the schools. They still have to go through a background check. We also have really rigorous check-ins. We have people walking past your child’s classroom all day long," Maggie Kelly said.

This means not having Graduated from High School! And no teaching experience AT ALL!!

Bad decision.

Very few substitute teachers teach, they’re usually just babysitters...not that I agree with the lowering of standards. Oregon isn’t educating their children now, this won’t move any needles.

Whether it’s a bad decision depends on the outcomes. If the requirement is to have a chronological adult with a pulse in the room, this might work. I wonder what the hourly pay is.

Idiot parents probably thought that they were getting something of value from the ‘certified’ teachers, so now they worry. What IDIOTS - sending their kids to public school and expecting anything other than total losers to come out!

There is an opportunity here to get some teachers in these schools who ARE NOT left wing nut jobs, teachers who can inject some right leaning culture to the classroom. The right is BLIND to such opportunities, we piss and moan about how bad things are but forget that there are a million small opportunities to make change, to move the needle in the correct direction, something the left excels at. We won’t win if we don’t try.

So what’s wrong with quitting school on your 18th birthday and getting hired to “teach” your friends the next day?

It doesn’t take a lot of education and experience to be a baby-sitter.

and undergo a background check
\/

Be careful. , the fingerprints can fall through a crack in the background check you know.

The background check probably includes a check to see if they are in good standing with antifa.

The Program is designed so the DemonicRats can get their “Mostly peaceful Thugs” government paying jobs between riots.

So, an opportunity for conservatives to get involved instead of sitting at the computer complaining?
