The trend is likely to continue into 2022, as patient acuity in both COVID-19 and non-COVID cases rises, new report says. KEY TAKEAWAYSThe Delta variant and employee shortages are cutting into hospital profitability. The nursing shortage will be intensified as employees leave because of burnout, family obligations, contract opportunities, and more.Worker shortages may open the door to unionization or lead to more difficult union negotiations, contributing to higher expenses. An ongoing shortage of hospital workers, particularly nurses, caused by the surge of the Delta variant, will place additional strain on not-for-profit hospitals' profitability in the long run, says a new report released by Moody's Investors Service.
Some hospitals have lost revenue by suspended elective overnight surgeries due to COVID cases and insufficient staffing, the report says.
"Over the next year, we expect margins to decline given wage inflation, use of expensive nursing agencies, increased recruitment and retention efforts, and expanded benefit packages that include more behavioral health services and offerings such as childcare," the report says. "Even after the pandemic, competition for labor is likely to continue as the population ages—a key social risk—and demand for services increases."

Hospitals are firing nurses left and right, for stupid reasons.
Yes, do tell us about the "more". That could be quite interesting.
From Upstate NY, and it’s thanks to the vaxx mandate...

didnt see any mention of firings cuz of good ol’ joe’s mandate. must not be the reason.
Joe’s non-mandate mandate.
BTW, most of the health systems in NYS that I’m familiar with are non-profits.
Maybe if they had to generate one annually, we wouldn’t be in this mess.
Maybe they should fire more nurses for not obeying the mandate?
Article complains of “wage inflation”, which means they think nurses are overpaid. No one ever complains about overpaid healthcare executives - it’s always the worker bees that are overpaid.
Their solution, of course, is to import cheap nurses from shithole countries.
How about paying American nurses more for a couple of years? Americans will see the higher salaries and become nurses. The supply will increase, and costs will decrease.
Dancing lessons cut into productivity as well.
Collapse the American health care system to “build back better.” Socialized medicine, here we come!
Create the problem and then complain about the problem. Perfectly illogical.

The administrators are taking money from the corrupt administration. They are only interested in power and money.
Darn shame. Really.
