new cancer treatment can wipe out tumours in terminally ill head and neck cancer patients, scientists have discovered.
In a landmark trial, a cocktail of immunotherapy medications harnessed patients’ immune systems to kill their own cancer cells and prompted “a positive trend in survival”, according to researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), London, and the Royal Marsden NHS foundation trust.
One patient, who was expected to die four years ago, told the Guardian of the “amazing” moment nurses called him weeks after he joined the study to say his tumour had “completely disappeared”. The 77-year-old grandfather is now cancer-free and spent last week on a cruise with his wife.
Scientists found the combination of nivolumab and ipilimumab medications led to a reduction in the size of tumours in terminally ill head and neck cancer patients. In some, their cancer vanished altogether, with doctors stunned to find no detectable sign of disease.
‘Revolutionary’ lung cancer drug made available on NHS in England Read more Combining the two immunotherapy drugs could prove an effective new weapon against several forms of advanced cancer, experts believe. Results from other trials of the drug combination have previously suggested similar benefits for terminally ill kidney, skin and bowel cancer patients.
As well as boosting the long-term survival chances of patients, scientists said, the immunotherapy treatment also triggered far fewer side-effects compared with the often gruelling nature of “extreme” chemotherapy, which is the standard treatment offered to many patients with advanced cancer.

Gambling joints should take up bets on how many years it will take to get it approved in the U.S.

Agreed - my father died from one and it was a very rough ride.
Me too. I had Merkel Cell Carcinoma head and neck stage 4.
Had operation and radiation January 2020. After 3 months the cancer was throughout my body cavity. Started Keytruda immuno therapy infusions in April. December 23, 2020 it was gone.
How great - congratulations!
They’ve both been out for years. First approved for melanoma and extended to more cancer types over time.
As an inveterate pipe and cigar smoker since 1957 this is good news.
Ipilimumab and novilumab are both available in the u.s. They work by stopping the message from the cancer cell that tell immune cells to leave them( the cancer cells) alone. Has to do with a compound called Programmed Death Ligand 1. (PDL1)...many other PDL1 inhibitors out there being used.
Side effects are that pdl1 is used in normal cells also to protect them from immune cells...so immune cells can now attack normal cells with no inhibition by pdl1.
If you got no hope with current therapies...this could help.
Good news but not unexpected.
The head that wouldn’t die!!!
If you’ve seen the movie, the alternate title was Farewell to Arms.

If the left and the anti-big pharma folks have their way, these kinds of innovations will dry up. Government has never made anything cost less or improve in supply or quality.
The article doesn’t say; but if you DON’T GET THE JAB, YOU DON’T GET THETREATMENT!
at least that’s my bet if it ever gets to America.
