A massive solar flare is due to hit Earth today, authorities are warning - potentially disrupting power grids and bringing the Northern Lights as far south as New York.
The flare - officially known as a coronal mass ejection (CME) - was observed on Saturday on the side of the sun directly facing our planet and comes as we enter a period of increased solar activity.
An alert was published by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) which warned the geomagnetic storm could cause power grid fluctuations with voltage alarms at higher latitudes, where the Earth is more exposed.
NOAA added that satellites may be impacted too and could exhibit "orientation irregularities" meaning ground control would have to redirect them, as well as anything in low-Earth orbit experiencing increased drag.
The geomagnetic storm could reach category G2, which is moderately strong according to the agency.

SNOWING here in N Nevada.
Wait till mr carrington eturns.....
A direct and prolonged hit could severely impact or even wipe out our society as it has done in the past. Even a repetition of the Carrington event of 1859 could do considerable damage should it take place now with all the electronic equipment in use. You may find an interesting article related to this subject in the VIEWZONE.COM magazine titled ‘What will doomsday be like?’ It points out how people at that time about 13 K-BC described such an event.

Best of luck as aurora pux are so beautiful.
I’ve seen them in southern
Colorado...beautiful, brilliant displays, some which were unaffected by city lights even. However, these storms had to reach into the kp9.
Well...coincidentally my internet is being disrupted. My email is down and other sites are not loading. It may be this? or it could be the crappy service from Spectrum. :O
Sunday night, the 10th I could not get AOL or Yahoo on my Chromebook. My partner did get gmail on his laptop (a much more expensive one than mine), but also could not get his Yahoo site either. I just tried AOL again, and it still won’t show itself. No luck with Yahoo either. Partner not here now.
Hope the overcast clears enough later to maybe get a look at that phenomenon. We're about 35 miles south of NYC.
