Over the past couple of months, Allison, a wife and mother of a toddler and teenager in Chicago, says she’s been spending about $50 more each week on groceries to feed her family — and that’s at a discount supermarket chain, Aldi’s.
“I used to spend $70 a week, but all of sudden this summer, I noticed that I couldn’t leave the store without spending at least $120,” said Allison, who works in education.
Like millions of Americans whose income has not kept pace with inflation — up 5.3 percent in August compared with a year ago — Allison and her family are feeling the pinch of the rising cost of living and giving up some things just to make ends meet.
“Price increases will continue until the middle of next year,” predicted Gordon Haskett analyst Chuck Grom, pointing to a PepsiCo announcement this week that consumers can expect another round of price hikes in early 2022 on the company’s snacks and beverages.
Indeed, a 10-ounce bag of Lay’s potato chips — Frito-Lay is owned by PepsiCo — cost $3.75 in August, 50 cents more than a year earlier at Dollar General stores in the Southwest, Grom said.
The prices of other items have also ratcheted up at the discount chain, including a dozen 12-ounce Coca-Cola cans that cost $5.75 in August — 50 cents more than in 2020 — at its Southwest stores, and a half a gallon of 2 percent store-brand milk that now costs $4.49, 74 cents more than a year earlier, according to Grom. At Family Dollar stores in the Northeast, the 12-pack of Coke cost $6.90 in August, up $1.50, and a can of Folger’s coffee costs 85 cents more, $8.80, he found.

Stupid should hurt.
Americans hit with a double whammy.
Shrinkage and higher prices.
I have 4x teenagers. I drop $250-300/week easy. You got it easy, lady.
Somebody supported these stupid Democrat sons of bitches.
Probably the same idiots who come here and write that it’s really the Republicans who are in charge.
Here’s a hint: cut out the Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and the chip snack bags and you’ll be able to afford nutritious food.
1/2 gallon of milk at Dollar General is $4.49? WOW.
I usually get a gallon of the store brand at our overpriced grocery for about $2.50 or a little less.
That said, I have been paying much more attention lately when shopping, and trying to buy extra of items that are on good sale prices (store brand potato chips for 99 cents on sale from $2.48, bone-in chicken breasts for $.98/lb, same with some pork chop cuts lately for $2 or less/lb.)
Eggs fluctuating between about $1.75 to $2.20/dozen. Sometimes hot dog and/or hamburger buns can be under $1 for 6 or 8.
Plus have to watch package sizing, which seems to be shrinking again.
Does anyone buy/eat canned mackeral? It looks like a good price (under $4/can), but not sure how I would use it.
We are around $1800-2300/month ourselves. 3 teenagers and 1 a bit younger. It hurts.
Looks like water and a little cheese this winter...at least it’s keto. :-)
I remember when I was a kid and dad and I went shopping for a big 4th of July 1976 Bicentennial party we had for the entire extended family. Filled up four grocery carts and the total came up to just over $100. I was stunned at how “expensive” that was. Today, we can’t leave with one cart load for less than $200 - just for two of us.
Cat food?
Eggs were $1.29 for an 18-count box about 6 weeks ago...now they’re on sale again...$1.29 per dozen.
Yea, I’m probably closer to where you are, I think now and I’m probably low balling it.
The 16 and 18 year old are constantly in sports, have jacked up metabolisms, and eat like wolves.
Looks like you eat gourmet. I’m all for it if you can swing it. Big difference how far $500 goes depending on the store. It costs $2000 per kid for school clothes at Saks but half that at Macy’s. Everyday wine can cost $10 or whatever. Try ED an Argentina red…cheap and good.
We are no longer going into the aisles when we shop. Only the outside lanes and more cooking fresh food at home. The exceptions are rice, water and dog treats.
Interesting to note all the items in the pasted copy are junk food or optional items.
“Feeding your family”
yeah, potato chips and coke
and then have a coffee nightcap
I haven’t noticed much increase in what I buy. Sales are back, and if you use coupons you can get good buys.
This week I got 3 60-ounce containers of All detergent for $1 each, regular price $3.88. The supermarkets want to get you to come, and periodically offer very low prices on selected items.
Thanks all you bastard liberals, who of course are not here on the Free Republic!
No worries, the social security raise next year will cover almost half of that $175.
That can’t be true, the White House said that people saved an average of 15 cents for outdoor barbeques this summer. </sarc>
