Yep, same time frame I was in high school, 12th grade in 72-73, and I remember the ROTC guys catching hell, viet nam was far from popular by then. Nixon flashing peace signs saying “I am not a crook”, and getting laughed at...Four Dead in Ohio...I wish I could get my hands on that poster of a National Guard guy at one of the college protests with a yellow flower in the barrel of his rifle...and he had to stand there at attention...Weeeelllll it’s one two three what’re we fightin for?

Yeah I remember a lot about those days...

One of my teachers asked the class, would you vote for Nixon or Humphrey not long before Nixon was elected the first time, when it got around to me I said neither. HUH? WHY??? Because they’re both liars. Teacher didn’t know how to react. Everyone else was trying to figure out a legitimate politlcal reason to vote for one or the other, I just said nope, both are liars. I think it was 8th grade.

So I know what you had to deal with, I saw it first hand. Those guys took a lot of crap...at the time, I was against it too, but I still respected the guys who did go over there, against it or not, I thought it was totally despicable for people to spit on our soldiers when they came back, they were not treated well at all.

I had a friend who was a marine, about 2 years in nam, had to go in alone, behind enemy lines, do his job and get back if he could. Hell on his parents, he was classified missing in action the minute he got on the plane in San Diego to leave. They coudn’t find out a thing at all until the day he landed again in San Diego...MIA was all the military would tell them.

The stories he told were pretty ugly. 1st day there the VC sent a kid around 10 years old into the Army camp with a hand grenade in each hand, saying potatoes? Potatoes?

So what do you do? Shoot a kid or let him blow up at least 30 people nearby? Including yourself...

In the jungle he lived on insects and grubs at times, went in with throwing knives and a garrote string, if he fired a gun they’d know he was there, so his .45 was taken from him the day before he went into the jungle.

You did not want to touch anything but his toes to wake him up...and stand back...about 6’3”, 240-260 lbs...maybe 5 or 10 of it fat...and wouldn’t hurt a fly...once he was awake. Touch his arm to wake him up, he’d knock you across the room and never realize it. I was the only one who would do it...but I knew how, touch his toe and call his name just before I did...and jump back...

I won’t repeat a lot of what he told me, that war was just ugly. We had never had to face an enemy like that, even in Korea, which was bad enough. They placed no value on human life, and would suicide in a heartbeat “for the cause” if it would take out a half dozen of their enemy. Brainwashed barely describes it.

I really hope you didn’t wake up screaming in the middle of the night like he did...I have no idea how many hours I spent just talking to him, or just letting him talk...and he’s far from the only one, many of those guys came back in that condition, I’ve known a half dozen who ended up chewing a gun barrel. Their final solution... Years later he was still usually in combat awareness mode. Don’t even sneak up on the guy...bad idea...and not easy to do either.

I hope you made it back without all the scars he had, and not one of them visible.

"...I told my daughter to always make sure to be kind to any kid she see’s getting bullied..."

Always be nice to the nerds in high school.
There's a good chance you'll end up working for one.

He has a, “grill” smile, a diamond earring, an expensive car and “nice clothes”.

High dollar high schooler.

My guess is the, “bullying” is drug related.

Bingo!

Well, how about that ‘no gun within 1000 feet of a school’ law?

Every kid gets bullied in school at one time or another. But they don’t pick up a gun and shoot classmates.

“It’s a sedan. And Dodge also puts V6 engines in the Charger too. Not all of them are muscle cars.”

Even the basest model in gnarly condition is worth over $20k according to NADA.

Went to lunch while visiting in hometown. Surprised to see the gal who got picked on really bad in school “waitressing”..... Once I Identified myself she immediately said to those I was with.....”She’s the only kid at school who would ever talk to me”...... (She stuttered and had glasses as thick as a magnifying glass.)

BTW....she owns the restaurant.

Shoot. I was bullied for wearing clothes from the missionary barrel, and having a junky bicycle. Never killed anybody over it.

The police were outside the families house after the shootings, looking for him. It appeared to be a higher end neighborhood, I would estimate in the 400 to 500 thousand price range.

Exactly. 2018 Dodge, full gold “grill”, large diamond earring, and the kid was “bullied”. Hogwash, the kid was a drug dealing street thug. Probably got “dissed”. School administrators need to get serious about keeping guns out. It can be done. I went to a school in the seventies with metal detectors and cops in the hallways. Enough already, these administrators are complicit.

I saw one estimate that was 50% higher. I’m curious to know where the gun came from.

The media is making excuses for drug dealers that shoot people. Black privilege.

I was lucky, graduated in May 1976, went on active duty in July’76.

The Senior Class President sat behind me in calculus, not a day went by without him attempting to belittle me...”sell out” was his pejorative of choice.

About a week before school ended, he came in with a fresh haircut, so he could start work at Sears! For several minutes, I let him have it over the hypocrisy he showed me. The teacher let me continue, though class had already begun. He was the only teacher who supported me. He taught calculus at Marquette, and was thrilled I was going to Gonzaga.
