I went to the case breaker’s website and also did a search using that name and it is reported in several places
The name is Gary Francis Poste (“Post”)
The case breakers believe among other things that he has scars on his forehead from an automobile crash when he was in the Air Force that match the witness identification and composite drawings
They also say they found his his name in one of the cryptograms The zodiac had allegedly bragged that you can find his name in one of the cryptograms
He was from Indiana but they say He had moved to the San Francisco Bay area in the late 60s
In my heart of hearts, yes. The similarities were more in quantity and quality than what you usually see in these offhand comparisons based on one or two factors. Which is why I felt constrained to write a book on the subject!
We may have gone back-and-forth on any number of occasions. I was there until 2008, at which time I'd had as much as I could stomach of the proprietor's arrogance and emotional immaturity. Besides, I'd spent more than ten years pursuing the subject, and I really needed to "get a life," so to speak, beyond the Zodiac Killer. So I wrote a book, put it out for sale and said to hell with it.
I’ve seen the Kaczynski theory off and on again for a while now but never explored it in-depth though it’s intriguing. Is it typical for serial killers to change their M.O. to such an extreme? Or while not typical, have there been other instances of it happening?
I wonder if Kaczynski has ever been asked outright? Stranger things have happened for sure!
in one of his letters he sent a piece of the shirt the cab driver he murdered was wearing. Other letters contained facts of the murders which had never been made public. So, it was definitely him.
Killers do indeed change their M.O., in order to adjust to changing circumstances or avoid detection. What they don’t change is what’s called by professionals their “signature,” or what they actually get emotionally from their crimes. I spent the first two chapters of my book showing how the “signature” elements of the Zodiac and Unabomber crimes were virtually identical, and also challenging the use of the term “serial killer” to define a type of murderer.
Kaczynski has been asked about the Zodiac crimes and has indignantly denied having committed them, in the process referring to me as a “kook,” which I found somewhat amusing, coming from a person who thought he was going to alter the course of human history by mailing out a couple of package bombs.
Being called a “kook” by Kaczynski could only be taken as a compliment... though, I will admit, aspects of his Techno Slavery (or whatever it’s called) manuscript have aged well. But, obviously, not sure how much more ‘nutjob’ it gets than mailing out letter bombs to people. Of course, nuts like Ted think we are all crazy and he’s the sane one.
I think the Zodiac Killer stopped around ~1969 and if memory serves, Ted didn’t start bombing until the late 70’s. With that in my mind, do you think he continued to kill undetected or that he went through a long cooling off period, which my understanding is rare (the super long part), but is possible as evidenced by BTK and The Golden State Killer?

Yeah. I actually saw some program on History channel of lies one time that revealed finding some of the money along a river bank in the sand. A man and his kid I think stumbled over it walking along the beach of a river and found the money. Serial numbers revealed it part of that money. Probably hit the river and everything went down stream and to the ocean except this part they found.
