Scientists believe they can explain why some people who catch Covid develop chilblain-like lesions on their toes and even fingers.
Covid toe appears to be a side effect of the body switching into attack mode to fight off the virus.
The researchers say they have pinpointed the parts of the immune system that appear to be involved.
The findings, in the British Journal of Dermatology, may help with treatments to ease the symptoms.
The affected skin - usually the toes, but sometimes the fingers - can look red or purple. Some people develop painful raised bumps or areas of rough skin. There can also be pus.
Some have it for months, others for weeks.
Often, they will have none of the classic Covid symptoms, such as the persistent cough, fever and loss or change in smell or taste.
Dr Veronique Bataille, a consultant dermatologist and spokeswoman for the British Skin Foundation, said Covid toe was seen very frequently during the early phase of the pandemic, but has been less common in the current Delta variant wave.
That might be down to more people being vaccinated or having some protection against Covid from past infections.
"Presentations after vaccination are much rarer," she said.
Covid-related skin problems can appear quite a while after the acute infection and in people who have no other symptoms, so the link with the virus is sometimes not made, she said.

He will get his someday.
The hidden lede in the article is people are still getting sick after vaccination.
I had COVID toe. It was more a ‘what the heck?’ moment than anything.
This was Dec 2019, no one had even heard of it.
That’s an interesting footnote. ;-)

IKYW!
“the body switching into attack mode to fight off the virus.”
Bodies have modes? An attack mode?
News to me. I studied biology and never heard of such a thing.
I can see them using this falsehood to push you into doing something you don’t want to do though. Clever. Sublime.
Crap, crap, crap.
The sound little Pooh hand make when they crap.
My body does, but you have to pull my finger to activate it!
Not very sick. The dead since April are the unvaxxed people following the advice of Ivermectin prescription sales dealers.
That’s just not true.
81% of the deaths from Covid in England (what we are talking about) are among the fully vaccinated.
The vaccine is a failure. It doesn’t work.
“The study, by the U.K.’s Office for National Statistics, recorded 640 deaths among fully vaccinated individuals between Jan. 2 and July 2, or 1.2% of 51,281 Covid-19 deaths overall. Of those 640, some were of people infected before their second dose or before the protection from a second dose had kicked in, the ONS said. The agency identified 256 as breakthrough deaths, in which the person died after testing positive for the virus at least 14 days after their second dose, or 0.5% of all Covid-19 deaths.” (Wall Street Journal)
And that’s in a country where by now 90% are vaccinated. A stunning rebuke to the entire antivax position, and in a country with an inferior vaccine in AstraZeneca.
This is the kind of crap we expect from you. The deaths during the period being examined was stated (640), along with the number of deaths during that period (256, or about 1/3), yet the conclusion used the much, much, much higher denominator of 'all' 51,281 deaths.
There’s a limit of how stupid a person I am willing to argue with, and you are below that limit.
Huh - my foot has had a couple of sores (that itch like CRAZY), and I thought it was either fire ants, mosquito bites, or athlete’s foot, so I’ve been spraying it with “Tough Acting Tinactin”, and it’s healed up a lot in 2 days.
Guess I should maybe schedule a CoVID test.. I was in Loony-fornia a couple weeks ago. Well, if I had it, I’m over it without even knowing I had it (except for the weird foot thing).
Did you forget the /s?
I developed Covid Toes about 3 weeks after my 2nd Moderna vaccination in March. I still have them. I have had numerous Covid tests before and since, all negative. I have read other articles attributing the condition directly to the Moderna vaccine.
If you think the side effects of “the jab” are bad, try chemo. I speak from experience.
