Reformers, lawmakers offer differing views of increased homicide rate in New York

Numbers released this week by the Federal Bureau of Investigation paint a stark picture of the last year: A nearly 30% rise in the homicide rate across the country, with New York also recording an increase.

The increase drove an overall increase in the violent crime rate — including assault, robbery and rape — by around 5%. Property crimes, meanwhile, continued to decline, falling by 8% since 2019.

But the FBI numbers do not dive into why the murders spiked last year, coming amid a pandemic that disrupted nearly every facet of life. Republican lawmakers who have opposed changes to New York's criminal justice laws in recent years blame those reforms. But advocates for the changes say the cause behind the spike is more complex.

"Collectively I think it had a profound impact because we believe, many of my colleagues and those in the field, believe it has created a revolving door of danger and disaster," said Republican Sen. Jim Tedisco, who represents the Capital Region suburbs.

State lawmakers in recent years have approved a series of bills meant to reduce the jail and prison population, including new laws overhauling bail and parole violations. Tedisco, along with his fellow lawmakers, have called for judges to have more discretion in setting bail, and more facilities are needed to keep violent people off the streets.

"This defies logic and common sense for constituents, for DAs, for law enforcement and for the judiciary," Tedisco said.

In recent days, Gov. Kathy Hochul has sought to reduce the number of people at Rikers Island jail in New York City, including an expansion of the use of remote hearings amid increasingly critical conditions at the facility.

"The answer is to create another facility, to have rehabilitation programs that really may work, but to keep the very violent people off the streets in an appropriate place," Tedisco said.

But Alexander Horwitz, of the advocacy group New Yorkers United for Justice, said the reasons behind the surge in homicides is more complicated.

"We need to look at all those complex factors that hit communities already struggling with crime and violence, communities that are already struggling with crime and poverty," he said.

Horwitz instead points to the pandemic as a primary driver of the unusual spike.

"We know that people were trapped in their apartments," he said. "We know that gun sales — there were 3 million more guns purchased in the summer of 2020 than the summer of 2019 — we know police and community relations were degrading and that was accelerated by the pandemic."

To address the problem, Horowitz said there needs to be a focus on helping disadvantaged communities.

"Restoring those programs and investing in those communities is the way forward and the way out," Horwitz said.

As long as Peanut is killing Pookie, why should anyone care?

The affected communities, the people they elect, and their community leaders do not care, why should anyone else?

To address the problem, Horowitz said there needs to be a focus on helping disadvantaged communities......translation - give us more money, grants and investment that only WE can control and we’ll take care of the rest. Don’t worry about how much money is given compared to how much money actually goes to the programs. That’s none of your concern.

On a side note, didn’t DeBlasio’s wife have oversight on almost $1,000,000,000 and all of it vanished?

Hmm, what cou,d possibly be the cause? Thinking... nope, couldn’t be abolishing of bail for violent crimes, letting violent criminals out of prison because of a cold, refusing to prosecute violent blm and Antifa domestic terrorists, threatening cops with murder for doing their jobs and defending themselves in violent situations, allowing violent illegal invader felons to flood the cities there, importing violent American-hating Foreigners by the planeloads, on and on and o. It goes. Nope , just couldn’t be any of that!

I wonder what it could, be?

When liberal policies fail, it is never their fault because it is complicated.

Yep. Because any solution offered by anybody else is racist.

Everyone with anything worth stealing has moved or locked down. The lockdown was the crime prevention plan.

There is no debate here. Just leftist making believe their silly crap isn’t the problem. We’ve been here before . How to fix the crime problem that demo idiot policies cause is known and been done before.

The answer is always more government, paid for with massive debt and printed money.

Someday soon, that won’t work any longer.

First of all, crime rises when there are more young people in the population because the vast majority of crimes are committed by people under 25. We are in the third “echo boom” of the original post-WWII baby boom.

Which is also part of why we have inflation. Raising young people is expensive and causes consumption but those young people aren’t in the work force yet contributing to productivity so we get higher inflation. The young are in school, which is expensive.

Now, drilling down to a specific, the only strategy that has ever worked to slow crimes committed using guns is “Stop and Frisk”.

Which is why it’s now racist, and is also why women are buying more guns every month.

"We know that people were trapped in their apartments,"

BS. No one was trapped anywhere. Many people were paid to NOT WORK. Sometimes they were paid more than they made when they DID work. Many others were actually unemployed. As the saying goes, "Idle hands are the devil's tools". In other words, people with nothing constructive to do will find destructive things to do.

To address the problem, Horowitz said there needs to be a focus on helping disadvantaged communities.

"Restoring those programs and investing in those communities is the way forward and the way out," Horwitz said.

Actually those programs are the root of the problem

One hundred years ago when the social safety net was a tissue in comparison to its size today there was far less crime.

When people have to work for a living they have far less time to commit crime.

When people responsible for their own survival they have more respect for the rights of others to the fruits of their labor.

IF they truly are interested in reducing crime they need to put people back to work and cut the size of the social safety net.

If no one went out to the locked down bars, restaurants, sports arenas and fitness places, how did people find murder victims?

Maybe all those domestic ones, people at home now stuffed together like olives in a glass jar, ready to settle the old scores. Sad.

Scumbags.

And last year as BLM supporters rioted, looted, brutalized families who wandered into their areas and shut down all commerce, the TV talking heads said “the demonstration, which is part of our longstanding American tradition of permitting freedom of expression in protest (others in panel nod heads and say “Yes”).

Guy with the hammer and his shirt off in Target, smashing the checkout computers again and again in a rage was part of the tradition. So was the one silhouetted against the flames of a burning building that used to be a store, raising his arms to show off his biceps proudly that he helped destroy it.

That really IS terrorism. But they got off due to black privilege.

I suppose the law of unintended consequences might help us out. It’s a one in a million chance, but it’s something.

” But advocates for the changes say the cause behind the spike is more complex. “

They ALWAYS do, that’s their cop out “You simply don’t understand”. Well, Rudy was an idiot (being a Republican), but all he did was throw criminals in jail, and the murder rate in NYC dropped by nearly 90%, making it FAR LOWER than any Democrat-run city in the country.
