Obamas plans of turning the nation dark with Haitians and Afghans and South Americans.....who will all be on the welfare rolls and accustomed to being dependent. Therefore they will all easily keep the Dems in office indefinitely and we'll soon discover the Islamification of the US is well underway.

We are surely losing this country to foreign invasion perpetuated by our government.

That has not been my experience. In fact, plenty of truly disabled people do not get the help they need. Now, are there lying bums who just want a check who get it? Hell yes there are. And plenty of them too - people who have ruined their health with sodomy, booze and drugs. But the Disability System is what keeps many sick people from living in a tent on the street. And take the money - who really gets most of it for the legitimately sick? Landlords, grocery stores, utility companies, gas stations, auto insurance companies. Most recipients are not getting rich on SSDI. That has been my experience.

SSDI is one of the most misused government programs. I know people who avoided treatment for their “disability” in order to get the money. I know people who haven’t worked a paying job in decades. Note I said paying. One I know works for free at the pool so she can have access to it. So she can work a job but doesn’t want to lose her free government check. I have a family member who gets it and works a job for cash. I really don’t know anyone on SSDI that is truly disabled. I know people on private insurance disability that cannot work and they got their money immediately.

Around here, they call it “hunting and fishing money”. My sister will still have to work when The Disability comes through because it is not enough. Luckily, Social Security allows people who are too disabled to work to have a job. Go figure.

This has been repeatedly said under this roof since day one.

Yes, the actions of TPTB prove the statement true.

You express concern about old white people but I think we are seeing a higher proportion of death among black and hispanic populations.

FYI

Mr. Persevero had to sue for three years to get his absolutely qualified long term disability. He is truly disabled, won’t go into all details.

His private disability arbitrarily cut him at six months for no medical or change of condition whatsoever. Near death and financially and physically exhausted he did not undertake to sue them.

He finally won against the (@)*$(*) state after three years. Oh, they take the premiums no problem. But get multiple cancers with ongoing and permanent complications and you can just hope you have a wife who will keep you alive somehow while you fight. Most other men would have just rolled over and died.

In short, there are hucksters who seem to get it easily, and legitimate who have to fight on top of all their problems or die, bankrupt. Thanks for the premiums all those years!

The reason why some people on SSDI have to work is that it is hard to live on the amount they get. Plus, there are the medical bills to consider and if you get SSDI, you do not get Medicare for two more years. I have known some of the “bums” too, and frankly, I do not blame some of them. They can work at a low paying job that does not have medical benefits and no real job security and barely eke out a living, or they can get SSDI and have income security and medical benefits in two years and barely eke out a living. Makes sense to me to get the SSDI. Then, if you supplement that with work, you have a higher standard of living and less anxiety. Now, there is a program where you transition back to the workforce as a disabled worker, but let us look at one such job. It is for a call center and you can work from home at $9-$10 per hour. Even if you got a 40 hour week, which most don’t you are trying to live as an impaired person on $20,000 per year tops and with no medical benefits at some point (about 8 years). Sounds like a bad trade to me, and the optimal thing is to work part time and draw SSDI

Now, consider the overall framework of society. Job have been shipped overseas, mostly to make rich folks richer, and also because the American work force is not what it used to be. Illegals do a lot of the work in some trades and while that is bad, it is also the only practical option for some employers. Suppose you have managed to get your budget to where you an survive by living in a trailer. The rent is $350 per month. An “investor” comes in and buys the park and ups the rent to $500 (price discovery don’t you know) - and with money he won by gambling in a hedge fund. Now, you can no longer afford your rent, and you don’t have the $5,000 to move your trailer even if you could find an affordable piece of land. Or the money to dig a well, put in a septic tank etc. If you were in that shape, do you not think it a reasonable response for some hillbilly to cash in on his diabetes, or arthritis or whatever? I do and I even think it moral.

The trust fund is a joke and it is long gone.

See post 55--there never was a "trust fund" from day one.

The politicians have been lying about it for eight five years!

“if you get SSDI, you do not get Medicare for two more years.”

Medicaid and it’s a deal with the devil. Ask anyone who accidentally exceeded the income limit. If The Disability is not enough to live on, it’s probably a bad idea to go that route. Our local hot dog vendor is on The Disability. The lady who cleans houses here is on The Disability. Anyone around here who isn’t working a W-2 job is probably on The Disability.

If you work 40 hours a week, you are eligible for benefits. People on The Disability can work so long as they don’t exceed the limit. As I told my family member “If you go that route, you are locking yourself into poverty”.

Private disability is different. If you can get it, it is MUCH better but getting it is tough because they can count on a % of people who just give up. My friend got it for horrible back problems due to work and they paid out immediately. He had a Workers Comp claim hanging over the company. But if they had gone to war with him, he had plenty of money and time and he was West Virginia Italian. Loud, relentless and wants you to explain everything to him over and over.

Just go down to Texas and walk across the river and put on some blackface and walk back.

Problem solved.

A lot of people in their 50s are already locked into poverty. Suppose you work for Abdul “The Frugal Pakistani” Patel in a convenience store. It is a small town and jobs are scarce. You bring home about $300 er week, but you are 55 and you are starting to slow down. Your joints ache and you have trouble hobbling around. Financially, you are barely making it, you have no health insurance, no pension plan and Abdul has a cousin in Pakistan who is 24 and tying to move to the United States. You can see the writing on the wall. You have squat in savings and you are going to have a hard time finding a job at your age. Why not try for SSDI?

If you get $1200 per month with SSDI, you will still be barely making in, but you are guaranteed a check every month, and plus you will get your full 100% social security instead of the 75% or less that you would get if you filed at 62 years of age. You will have medicare in two years and Medicaid most likely in the interim. Plus, you can still work 10-20 hours per week for Abdul in the crap hours that his cousin will not want to work. That will marginally improve your life.

If you go that route, you are locking yourself into poverty.

True statement--but in the "progressive" economy, more and more people are just going to give up and conclude their future is not very bright.

They will continue to swell the "disability" rolls.

Plus here are the stats: The typical SSDI beneficiary is in his or her late 50s — 75 percent are over age 50, and nearly 35 percent are 60 or older — and suffers from a severe mental, musculoskeletal, or other debilitating impairment.
