At a Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors meeting at the end of August, Supervisor Susan Ellenberg repeatedly pressed Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody on when the county's indoor mask mandate would be lifted.
The number of new COVID-19 cases in Santa Clara County had started to slow at the time of the meeting, and when Ellenberg asked Cody how long the mandate would last, Cody seemed to suggest some degree of perpetuity. What followed was an exchange that grew increasingly tense with each reply.
"I appreciate that comment about the flu, of course last year not only were we masked, but kids weren't at school and a lot of folks weren't at work, so we really had some additional protection there," Ellenberg replied. "... What do you recommend that we tell people who are asking, 'At what point do the masks come off?' If we're going to be living with this, as you say, for quite a while, are masks indefinitely in our future?"
"Well I would say we don't have a set metric," Cody said. "I would say we need to see our hospitals settle down, our cases low and flat, and some stability before we would recommend taking away this very important prevention measure. And the other thing I would say is that even without a requirement, people will continue to mask indoors, it's part of many cultures and may well become part of our culture or at least in some segments as well."

If masks were effective they wouldn’t need them nor the vax anymore.
That’s the neighboring county to the west of Santa Clara County. Santa Cruz has nowhere been as tyrannical as Santa Clara County has been throughout COVID.
Look at the bright side, lady. You can take the mask off if you get the Guv to invite you to dinner at the French Laundry. Or get a wash and a do with the Speaker.
Different county. Your citation is for Santa Cruz County. This article is about Santa Clara County.
I know, they sound alike and are next door to each other.
Not where I live, thank goodness. Diapered faces are not unheard of, but definitely the minority here.
“..it’s part of many cultures and may well become part of our culture”
What next, burqas?
Even the bay area is getting tired of the masks, at least in some quarters.
The elected politicians are lying, of course. They are hiding behind the governor’s “state of emergency” order that he issued *18 months* ago. These are all Democrat pols, Newsome would absolutely revoke it if there was enough pressure from within his party, but that’s the last thing these people want. The minute that state of emergency gets revoked, the supervisors and mayors will be on the hotseat, caught between the half of their constituents who want to go back to normal life, and the Karens who love the ‘rona.
Well, I suspect that the vast majority of people who mask up only do so to avoid social haranguing or hassling
Ugh!
Put the mask back on!
I’m embarrassed to say she was part of my graduating class. I am not sure how I will handle the upcoming 35th reunion but it may be difficult to restrain from snarky comments.
Let’s be clear: Sara Cody said the mask mandate may last forever. FOREVER!
None of the politicians have the cojones to rein her in.
