McConnell blocks Schumer attempt to bypass filibuster on debt hike

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) blocked an effort by Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) to bypass the 60-vote legislative filibuster on a debt ceiling hike.

Schumer tried to get an agreement to set up a simple majority vote on a bill to suspend the nation's borrowing limit, which would bypass the filibuster and let Democrats raise it without GOP support.

"Simply allow for a simple majority threshold to raise the debt ceiling and avoid this needless catastrophe that Republicans have steered us toward," Schumer said.

So now what? Will the federal government shut down, or default on federal debt, or other drastic consequences? Stay tuned.

So the same people who brought us this debt crisis are managing the spending limit? How screwed up is this?

My guess is that a clean CR will be passed which will go up to Christmas, as it has for almost every year since TARP, providing much needed political holiday entertainment.

10% of the budget can be cut, including whole departments. No one would notice.

So now what?

*************

Same ole, same ole. That’s what. Just the usual senseless drama of nothing playing out. Everyone knows there is really no debt or spending limits, and never will be.

It got shut down under Clinton...and under Trump....and has shut down MANY times for a couple days.

Bury the $3.5 trillion bill...and lets get things done. It's not the time for free college and more nursery school and every other give away they could think of.

Agree. It is high time we face facts/reality. If we had earlier, we would never have been in Iraq, Afghanistan, nor would we be a nation of handouts/socialism. This free everything is BS. Only Trump had any background in business and econ. Our fed Gov is trash. We could cut 1/3 or more of all fed jobs.

There will be Kabuki theater by the Republicans for a little bit. The Demonicrats and the fifth-column enemedia will accuse the Republicans of bring misery, disease, and death on Americans by refusing to raise the debt limit. The Republicans will cave.

It's just a rerun from all the previous times.

"Simply allow for a simple majority threshold to raise the debt ceiling and avoid this needless catastrophe that Republicans have steered us toward," Schumer said."

"Catastrophe"! Can that putz EVER say anything that is not pure hyperbole? IIRC, there has never been any "catastrophe" in any of the past so-called Fedgov shutdowns. The country keeps operating while most don't even notice other being spoon-fed the "catastrophe" on MSM with their hysterics and hair on fire. Fedgov employees get a free vacation and then back pay.

No one other than lower enlisted military that live paycheck to paycheck and some campers denied entrance to parks are affected. I can't recall if the "gimmedats" welfare checks are sent. So what if they aren't?

I've always said, "the less the Fedgov is in session, the less harm they can do." Shut it down! I don't care. So I miss some SS payments, I've positioned my retirement not to count on that income.

Has anyone noticed that Schumer and Pelosi are no longer pushing for the end of the filibuster? No surprise to me with the 2022 rout coming. They are mean and evil, but not stupid.

They will need the filibuster when they lose the House and Senate.

He's really in favor of increasing the deficit and spending lots more borrowed money, but appreciates the optics.
