The Amtrak train that derailed in Montana on Saturday was traveling just under the speed limit at the time of crash that killed three people and injured dozens of others, US investigators said Monday.
The westbound Empire Builder was going a touch under 75 mph when it went off the track along a gradual curve in the rural town of Joplin, according to National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg.
A 14-member NTSB team is investigating the cause of the wreck that resulted in the derailment of eight of the train’s 10 ten cars.

Most likely a switch miss alignment caused the derailment.
The photos I’ve seen show the engines on the tracks and the passenger cars off the tracks.
Unlikely (but not impossible), as those switch points have to be closed (within 1/4”) and locked in that position before a clear signal could be given to proceed. Plus, they are checked monthly to that standard.
Sounds like real infrastructure issues.

an alert frerper pointed out fresh rail road ties in this video? may not mean anything but repairs being made?

Wonder if Fedzilla is telling the truth about the speed...
Good catch! At about 10 seconds in the video there are three or four ties that have the ends marked with white paint. They are marked for replacement.

Interesting. Definitely there was some tie replacement planned for this section of rail as there are several piles of new wooden ties in the video along the side of the rail bed.
When the Democrats shut down oil pipelines, then oil has to be shipped by rail.
Too many oil trains?
We do need to spend some money on ACTUAL infrastructure.

Train tracks are maintained by the corporation that owns them and not the government. These tracks are owned by BNSF. Amtrak just uses them.
I used to pick up loose railroad spikes when I was a kid. I swear I have never been to Montana. (not even for dental floss)
It made an unscheduled 90 minute stop some 20 odd miles outside Minot because BNSF decided to park some freight cars on the trunk line.
The passenger train didn't get moving again until BNSF decided to move those cars. Most likely because they had another freight train coming through, not for Amtrak's convenience.
I have a railroad track 1/4 mile from me.
They replaced ties this spring...VERY efficient.
Machine hammers out the old tie, and immediately hammers in the new one.
At least 1 miles of track cleaned up. Then-—They ran short trains down & back SLOWLY to settle the gravel.
They have staged materials at every road crossing to make repairs there, also. Don’t know when that will happen. This is rural territory-—NOT alot of alternative streets/roads to use while they block a crossing.
Warren Buffet’s responsibility.
“The westbound Empire Builder was going a touch under 75 mph when it went off the track”
The last time I was on an Amtrak, the speed limit was something closer to 25 mph. So maybe some clown changed the sign as a joke?
Out in the middle of Montana, the speed limit is probably a little faster than 25.
