Anybody who thinks roosters only crow at sunrise has never lived near chickens. We hear them 24/7 and they are down the hill below us. I wouldn't want to even imagine what it must be like living next door. But we never complain about it because the chickens were there before we were.
My liberal neighbor with one of those “We Believe” signs has a chicken coop in his backyard.
You don’t have to have a rooster to have chickens.
Roosters are for breeding. Chickens don’t need a rooster to lay eggs.
I remember vacationing in summer on The north shore of Kauai listening to the roosters crow. I don’t know what breed those feral Kauai chickens are descended from but the roosters have a crow that sounds strangled. When I heard one for the first time I thought that there was something wrong with it.
I enjoyed it and started getting up with them because I’ve gotten in the habit of falling asleep shortly after sunset. Hiking, snorkeling, and playing in the surf all day for weeks will do that to you.
where i live one can own hens but not roosters...
I KNEW there was a reason I liked you! See Post #72. :)
We live way out in the country.
The nearest neighbor has a very loud rooster who crows at all hours.
We have a lot of other country sounds like loud crickets and coyote and owl howling at night.
I enjoy the sounds..fwiw.
