Medal of Honor recipient, David Dolby.
Thank you, sir, for your service to our country.

David Charles Dolby (May 14, 1946 – August 6, 2010) was a United States Army soldier who received the U.S. military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in the Vietnam War.

Dolby was born on May 14, 1946, in Norristown, Pennsylvania. He joined the Army from Philadelphia and by May 21, 1966, was serving in the Republic of Vietnam as a specialist four with Company B, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). On that day, his platoon came under heavy fire which killed six soldiers and wounded a number of others, including the platoon leader. Throughout the ensuing four-hour battle, Dolby led his platoon in its defense, organized the extraction of the wounded, and directed artillery fire despite close-range attacks from enemy snipers and automatic weapons. He single-handedly attacked the hostile positions and silenced three machine guns, allowing a friendly force to execute a flank attack.

Dolby was subsequently promoted to sergeant and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during the battle. The medal was formally presented to him by President Lyndon B. Johnson on September 28, 1967.

Dolby died on the morning of August 6, 2010, in Spirit Lake, Idaho, at age 64.

Rank and organization: Sergeant (then SP4c.), U.S. Army, Company B, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile)

Place and date: Republic of Vietnam, 21 May 1966

Entered service at: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Born: 14 May 1946, Norristown, Pennsylvania

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty, when his platoon, while advancing tactically, suddenly came under intense fire from the enemy located on a ridge immediately to the front. 6 members of the platoon were killed instantly and a number were wounded, including the platoon leader. Sgt. Dolby's every move brought fire from the enemy. However, aware that the platoon leader was critically wounded, and that the platoon was in a precarious situation, Sgt. Dolby moved the wounded men to safety and deployed the remainder of the platoon to engage the enemy. Subsequently, his dying platoon leader ordered Sgt. Dolby to withdraw the forward elements to rejoin the platoon. Despite the continuing intense enemy fire and with utter disregard for his own safety, Sgt. Dolby positioned able bodied men to cover the withdrawal of the forward elements, assisted the wounded to the new position, and he, alone, attacked enemy positions until his ammunition was expended. Replenishing his ammunition, he returned to the area of most intense action, singlehandedly killed 3 enemy machine gunners and neutralized the enemy fire, thus enabling friendly elements on the flank to advance on the enemy redoubt. He defied the enemy fire to personally carry a seriously wounded soldier to safety where he could be treated and, returning to the forward area, he crawled through withering fire to within 50 meters of the enemy bunkers and threw smoke grenades to mark them for air strikes. Although repeatedly under fire at close range from enemy snipers and automatic weapons, Sgt. Dolby directed artillery fire on the enemy and succeeded in silencing several enemy weapons. He remained in his exposed location until his comrades had displaced to more secure positions. His actions of unsurpassed valor during 4 hours of intense combat were a source of inspiration to his entire company, contributed significantly to the success of the overall assault on the enemy position, and were directly responsible for saving the lives of a number of his fellow soldiers. Sgt. Dolby's heroism was in the highest tradition of the U.S. Army.

Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families.  This is a politics-free zone!  Thanks for helping us in our mission!

Howdy, Kathy.

Did you have some kick-back time today? Though sunny, it’s a bit brisk up there for relaxing on your deck but you do have that nice, comfy recliner to lounge in. :-)

Howdy, PRO!

How’s your weekend been? I hope it was as pretty there as it was here. We’ve had fabulous fall weather. BUT, it’ll warm back up this week. Not unbearable but pretty toasty.

Good evening, radu...did you get some rest? Feet recovered? Ground working on drying out some?

Sun is out here...finally reached my deck so I can shovel off any snow remaining. I tried before the sun hit it, but it was rock hard.

Hi radu!

Nice weekend, our weather is turning cooler too but still plenty of sunny weather ahead this week.

Son was over again last night for dinner and hanging.

College football is my last sports interest and yesterday it was a day of great football and my teams won. I'm disappointed that all pro sports, MLB, NBA and NFL have gone 'Woke' and I will no longer watch or support them, let them die.

I briefly knew Dolby who we called “The Gentle Giant”. A very humble person who cried when he talked about the death of his wife ( as I recall it) at a vietnam conference we participated in at Simmons College/Boston In. In 2004.

One of our bravest!

Freep mail me to be on or off the Daily Bread ping list

September 27

Unlimited

Bible in a Year:

The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary.

Isaiah 40:28 There I am, sitting in the shopping mall food court, my body tense and my stomach knotted over looming work deadlines. As I unwrap my burger and take a bite, people rush around me, fretting over their own tasks. How limited we all are, I think to myself, limited in time, energy, and capacity.

I consider writing a new to-do list and prioritizing the urgent tasks, but as I pull out a pen another thought enters my mind: a thought of One who is infinite and unlimited, who effortlessly accomplishes all that He desires.

This God, Isaiah says, can measure the oceans in the hollow of His hand and collect the dust of the earth in a basket (Isaiah 40:12). He names the stars of the heavens and directs their path (v. 26), knows the rulers of the world and oversees their careers (v. 23), considers islands mere specks of dust and the nations like drops in the sea (v. 15). “To whom will you compare me?” He asks (v. 25). “The Lord is the everlasting God,” Isaiah replies. “He will not grow tired or weary” (v. 28).

Stress and strain are never good for us, but on this day they deliver a powerful lesson. The unlimited God is not like me. He accomplishes everything He wishes. I finish my burger, and then pause once more. And silently worship.

Reflect & Pray

How will you draw on God’s unlimited strength today? (vv. 29–31). In the midst of your tasks and deadlines, how will you pause to worship the infinite One?

Loving God, You’re the unlimited One who’ll accomplish all You’ve promised.

Lucky you! I hold MOH awardees in higher esteem than I do General Officers.

I passed by a MOH guy wearing it proudly, (E-5 I believe) in uniform at an airport while also in uniform and the only thing that sprang into my mind was to render a salute, which he returned!

Yes, I got a decent night’s sleep and took it a little easy today. Did have to make a grocery run and that was my big “hurrah” for the day. LOL

The ground’s dried out now and farmers are out harvesting. I passed a couple of fields with combines rolling on the way into town.

Our cotton is finally in its last stages. After all the rain we had a week ago, the bolls are bursting open and the leaves are beginning to turn brown. YAY!

You’ve had a beautiful day up there, though a little chilly. Mt. Denali was even visible and we haven’t seen that on the cam for quite a while. All the mountains are glistening with snow, making the views all around really pretty.

I hope the sunshine softened the last of the snow on your deck by now so you can get rid of it.

Mmmmmm, sounds like we might have similar weather ahead this week. Sunny and comfortable. Feels great, doesn’t it?

At least you still have college football to enjoy. I keep hoping the “woke” pro sports will end up losing support but I guess there are enough ‘woke” fans still out there to keep them going.

I was a NASCAR fan for years but they turned wussie and I lost interest. Too bad because it was a lot of fun to go to the races, especially Talladega. Those were some wild weekends on the infield!

I got inspired and did a bunch of little projects. LOL! Things only noticeable to me.

Now the sun is on the deck so I need to shovel off the last snow and let it dry off. Lots of leaves to dry so I can sweep.
