SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday approved nearly $1 billion in new spending to prevent wildfires, signaling a policy shift in a state that historically focused more on putting out fires than stopping them before they start.
California spent $3.4 billion on wildfire protection last year, more than quadruple the level 15 years ago and a reflection of the reality that wildfires are getting bigger and more destructive from climate change.
Scientists have long warned that the weather will get wilder as the world warms. Climate change has made the West much warmer and drier in the past 30 years.
Most of the wildfire prevention money will pay for things like clearing brush and dead trees that act as kindling when fires start, causing them to quickly burn out of control before firefighters can contain them.
There’s money to hire inspectors to make sure newer homes built in the state’s wildfire-prone areas comply with building codes requiring fire-resistant materials. And there’s money for the state to intentionally set fires when conditions are right to burn away fuel that would otherwise help larger fires burn during the dry season.
The money Newsom approved is the final piece of the state’s $262.5 billion operating budget. The spending Newsom approved Thursday also includes $1.2 billion for things like water recycling projects, cleaning up contaminated water sources and grants to help communities plan for climate change.
Republicans have criticized the spending because it does not include money for water storage projects, like building new reservoirs. California voters approved about $2.7 billion in 2014 for water storage projects. But so far, none of those have been built.

They didn’t need money to do the brush clearing. They need to get out of the way of the land owners who want to do the brush clearing.
“Climate Change”. Yeah. I wear jackets in the winter and shorts in the summer. Climate change. DUH!!!
Maybe they should let things burn, like nature intended?
THINNING & FIRE ROADS! it’s not rocket surgery
“planning for climate change”
What have you been doing the 30-40 years?
The Left’s own lies are driving them to finally do the right thing.
Finally getting down to doing what Trump told them to do a couple years ago.
Cut more trees down, especially the dead and drying ones.
Problem solved.
>> rocket surgery <<
LOL
The solution to this issue has been known for 45+ years. Nobody capable of making a decision seems to care.
Covid and the 2020 election have demonstrated to many the methods used to perpetuate the Global Warming Hoax. Worldwide average temperatures cannot actually be measured in the tiny increments that we are suppose to be disturbed by. And there is no correlation to “extreme weather events” which are not on the rise. If it were possible to accurately measure average worldwide temperatures which are cyclic, they more than likely peaked several years ago along with solar phenomena which can be measured and seem to be associated with historical climate changes.
“Scientists have long warned that the weather will get wilder as the world warms.”
Hmm. Looked up electricity generation in California. Over the last ten years usage has decreased from 293,000 gwh to 272000 gwh.
I imagine air conditioning is a significant part of the usage. Could air conditioning usage have declined? Because California is cooling?
Right is all climate change not CA’s moronic forestry polices
Wild fires are Mother Nature in action. The clown show environmentalist cult in CA should be out worshiping them not complaining about them
Atlanta GA averages 47 days over 90 degrees every year. We had 18 this year. Both this summer and last have been cooler and wetter then average. With only 18 days over 90 degrees, this year is far cooler then average.
Like every other sane state with large forests does now.
“California spent $3.4 billion on wildfire protection last year, more than quadruple the level 15 years ago and a reflection of the reality that wildfires are getting bigger and more destructive from climate change.”
Bulls$it
It is called logging and CA has darn near killed that industry in the state. During logging the forest is thinned by taking trees for board foot, and the ladder fuels are chipped in order to fuel the co-gen plants that provide energy for the sawmill.
The fire roads are not fire roads per se. They are the roads created by logging in order to get the product out. The roads of course are dual purpose as they are the avenues in which the firefighters use to get to the fire if/when there is one. But the fire roads are created by the loggers not fire personnel.
Lastly you do not gate everything off, as it is we the people, traveling those backroads, which keep said roads from being overgrown and unusable.
It is all quite simple, and all we need from the government is for them to get the hell out of the way.
If you think about it logically, you’ll realize whey they
came up with this puddin head idea in the first place.
Was it to prevent fires? No. Forget that... It’s bogus.
After shuttering the nuclear power plants and the natural
gas plants, they don’t have the power to run California
anymore. They can’t meet the demand.
So they came up with this idea of cutting off power to certain
regions to “prevent fires.”
It was a brilliant idea. People think they have to suffer
through the loss of power to help out.
On the hottest days when the most power is needed, they
just cut off the power to a region and tell folks it’s
to prevent fires.
Then they redirect the power to other regions to keep
them going like normal.
The Left, they always have an angle.
Here in Los Angeles in 2019*, the first half of the year was
5-15 degrees lower than than norm. We didn’t get real warm
weather until nearly July.
I followed it fairly closely for a few months, and the
monthly averages were markedly lower on a monthly average.
Not a peep out of anyone about global cooling. As soon as
the weather got warmer, they started talking about how long
“this terrible heat wave” would continue.
It’s such B.S. If you think on the level of a 14 year old,
you’ll fall for the global warming nonsense. The adults
in the room will understand weather is always changing.
Sometimes it’s hotter. Some times it’s cooler. Who knew?
* It may have been 2018. I don’t remember now.
