Report: New Mexico students further behind, 31% ‘proficient’

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico’s elementary school students may be falling further behind, according to a review of preliminary academic data by legislative analysts that shows less than one-third of students are proficient.

While New Mexico students tested poorly before the pandemic, the latest data suggests the outcomes are even worse as the percentage of those considered proficient and learning at grade level dropped from 37% to just 31% last spring.

The report estimates students lost between 10 and 60 days of instruction. New Mexico already has fewer school days than many other states, and some rural schools are only in session four days per week.

Last year, students faced school closures, were absent more frequently, and had limited access to online learning.

Nonpartisan policy advisors suggested the lost learning time is even more concerning because around half of school districts rejected funding for extra school days after pushback from parents and staff.

NM is a Blue state. This outcome isn’t only not surprising, it’s probably the hoped-for outcome.

Everywhere the left governs is destroyed eventually. the media always looking at bad news in red areas but the only issues caused in red states is from leftist federal policy like Texas open border madness causing Covid spikes. Or Blue hot spots in Red states, always are a disaster in comparison.

the left destroys.

The majority of funds supporting education in New Mexico (up to 45%) come from oil and natural gas production. However the radical leftist eco-Nazi governor, Michelle "Lockdown" Lujan Grisham and her enviro-radical cronies are doing there best to shut down the industry. Talk about killing the Golden Goose!

Yesterday's local paper had a story about a gas processing company (DCP Midstream) who was fined a million dollars because of air quality violations that occurred from to 2017 to 2019. Most violations came as a result of power, weather or equipment failure and the company followed procedure and reported to the environmental agency. Instead of appealing the fine, which they acknowledged would likely do no good given the radicals in charge of the agency, the company paid the fine and was required to close one of its big gas processing facilities within 60-days and remove all chemicals and infrastructure within 270 days of the order. The facility is in Eunice which is only about seven miles from the Texas state line so local well paying jobs will be lost in the name of fighting global warming/climate change.

NM list PING!

I may not PING for all New Mexico articles. To see New Mexico articles by topic click here: New Mexico Topics

To see NM articles by keyword, click here: New Mexico Keyword

To see the NM Message Page, click here: New Mexico Messages

(The NM list is available on my FR homepage for FR member use; its use in the News Forum should not be for trivial or inconsequential posts. Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
(For ABQ Journal articles requiring a subscription, they have recently changed their policy and allow ten free articles before a subscription is required. I would like clarification from non-subscribers if that is actually the current policy.)

The report estimates students lost between 10 and 60 days of instruction.

With their rate of absenteeism, the numbers drop.

Maupin Elementary in Louisville, KY has a dismal 5% proficiency in math and reading. 91.4% black.

When I lived and went to school there in NM, 1954-1956 and 1959-1962 the schools were EXCELLENT compared to the Ozark schools I was dragged into to.

Even the lunches were good EXCEPT at Aztec schools in 1956. Worst lunches I ever ate. Finally mom started fixing me a lunch from home.

Now the Ozark schools are excellent and NM is on the bottom.

WHAT HAPPENED!

No problem. Just add points to minority test scores and all NM students will be above average.

More school days aren’t going to do anything. They will just spend more time learning deviancy and how to be woke.

Having dated a woman whose ancestry goes back to the original indigenous inhabitants and the Spanish colonists of Santa Fe, keep in mind that most hispanics in NM are not the descendants of post WWII immigrants. Hispanics were the majority population of NM until the 1960s I believe.

Still, corrupt politics and a parochial outlook on life does not a prosperous society make.

The fact that many third generation (and up) New Mexicans consider themselves Hispanics rather than Americans is telling. No es verdad?
