Any reason in particular Abbott couldn’t have done this two days and 10k illegals ago? Seems Abbott is closing the barn door after the horse is long gone.
Abbott had go find a legal and hopefully court-proof way of acting re his state powers as the governor. He can do a lot on private lands.

Due to official documentation, like Federal/State Memoranda of Understanding, and the interplay between Federal and State Law, it very likely took this long for Attorneys advising Gov. Abbott to figure out what actions were unassailably within his power as Governor.
This isn’t freakin’ Hollywood; he can’t just haul a bazillion Texas badges down there slingin’ guns and willy-nilly herd 15,000 people back across the river without thinking out all the gory legal details. Such recklessness Executive Action on Abbott’s part could damn well cripple his future ability to do anything, and could well land his ass in the Federal Prison on Federal charges.
He’s not a f’n Democrat, you know; he has no measure of immunity unless all of Texas were to stand up, defy the Federal powers, and say, in effect “He’s our Governor, he’s doing what we want, and just let’s see you try to come get him.”
Even looking at the gutter sniping going on here on FR, Abbott simply DOES NOT have that kind of support. Frankly, it’s a damnable shame he doesn’t; Washington DC could stand to be openly, and thoroughly defied w/resp to a huge national policy issue like this one.
