In one of his first actions after surviving an election seeking to oust him from office, Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday essentially abolished single-family zoning in California — and green-lighted a series of bills intended to bolster the state’s housing production.
By signing Senate Bill 9 into law, Newsom opened the door for the development of up to four residential units on single-family lots across California. The move follows a growing push by local governments to allow multi-family dwellings in more residential neighborhoods. Berkeley voted to eliminate single-family zoning by Dec. 2022, and San Jose is set to consider the issue next month.
While opponents fear such a sweeping change will destroy the character of residential neighborhoods, supporters hail it as a necessary way to combat the state’s persistent housing crisis and correct city zoning laws that have contributed to racial segregation...

They’ve spruced it up a bit since Communist times.
Boy, talk about socialism and communism! Have you a better example to put forward? That slob just nullified family ownership of their own home. There is a Constitutional argument to be made here. Gavin Newsom is a true democrat. He will run the party line all the way. Why if not a socialist move, do they want to remove people’s right to own their own home? Newsom Stinks to high heaven!
What does everybody think will happen to the real estate market in California now?
I see a couple of things emerging quickly:
1. If you run the risk of buying a single family home and the guy next to you sells to developers who put FOUR units next door, I would think that has to reduce prices.
2. It will also accelerate the flood of people leaving California.
3. This might drive up prices in neighboring states as well as Idaho and Texas as more people flee the People’s Republic of California.
We kept our house in California when we bought in Idaho (I always planned to be able to winter in CA). But now we are wondering if we should cash out of CA while we can.
What does your crystal ball say?
Gruesome Newsom is just getting warmed up, folks.
Y’all ain’t seen nothing yet!!
Scorched earth policies are coming.
And why not?
Is there any slightest indication that the American people would either stop, attempt to stop, or raise hell about this?
Our communist masters are living large and in total control...
This is just the barebones beginning...
When Americans realize how bad things are, they will band together, once again, at Concord Bridge and chant:
Bow down!... Obey!... Snitch!...
Many times HOAs CC&Rs prohibit dividing lots. Does this new law nullify those CC&Rs clauses? This may be the only instance I would want to have an HOA.
Except Beverly Hills and other influential and wealthy neighborhood, I’ll bet.
You will live in a government barracks. You will eat what you are given. You will own nothing and you will be HAPPY!
Who else will benefit?
Imagine that pic AFTER an 8.0 quake!!!!!
Look for the communist junta in DC to try the same thing with HUD alleging single-family zoning is "rayciss."
That’s a lot of “takings” if citizens pursue it.
destroy the character of residential neighborhoods, they want everyone living with gang violence and drugs
Same here. Let me know your criteria and your decision.
I’m thinking
North Carolina
Missouri
Northwest Arkansas
Georgia mountains
Alabama-Missisippi deep south
Texas
Florida
Trump was right again.
If California legislature Democrats still have supermajority veto override power then they are hiding behind Newsom on this single-family zoning issue by letting him get away with it, protecting their voting records by doing so imo.
I’m sure Hollywood is exempt, Gavin’s neighborhood - and Nancy’s and the billionaire big donors to the democrat party. And any commie filth .... ‘cause they fund ‘em...
This is part of the new world order. It destroys the communities where people know each other, Share the same values, and work together to defend principles. Division is key to their plans.
