The 'Old Farmer's Almanac' Just Released the Forecast for Winter 2021-2022

Winter is one of those things that most people have a strong reaction to—either they totally adore it or completely despise it. But some folks, like Ree Drummond, have found themselves on both ends of the seasonal spectrum over the years.

"When I was a little girl, winter was my favorite season," Ree says. "I was all about sledding, snowball fights, and snow days."

If you're still holding on to some warm and fuzzy feelings about winter, this could be the year that finally changes your mind, too. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, the upcoming season ain't going to be pretty.

The 230-year-old publication — which claims to make predictions with 80% accuracy — just released its annual forecast for winter 2021-2022. It's going to be so cold across the country, they have actually taken to calling it the "season of shivers."

A painful combination of above-average snowfall and below-average temperatures are expected in the New England area, parts of the Appalachian region, throughout the Ohio Valley, in the northern part of the Deep South, and even in southern New Mexico. The Old Farmer's Almanac editor, Janice Stillman, said this winter could be "one of the longest and coldest that we’ve seen in years."

Grrreaaat. Break out your parka and prepare to weather some storms!

The thing that will clearly make for much more winter cold is the multitude of sprint/summer/fall volcanoes spewing ash into the upper atmosphere.

And, there have been plenty of them.

I thought due to climate change kids will never see snow again?

I hate winter. I’m in “cold and snowy” according to the map…

Here’s their prediction for last year:

“The centuries-old forecaster is predicting a light winter for most of the United States, with warmer-than-normal temperatures expected for a large part of the country.”

How’d that turn out?

Any weather that isn’t San Diego in the Spring is climate change.

IIRC, doesn’t the almanac’s formula closely resemble Weatherbell’s? The latter seems much more erudite and deeply informed, but the almanac relies heavily on historical patterns.

Actually in central Indiana pretty close. We had little snow and the temperature were not brutal by any stretch of the imagination.

Illegals and refugees don’t like cold weather. This may be a good thing.

Oh yay!! I’m in the Cold/Snowy section.

I never saw snow for the first time until we moved to TN from FL in the late 60’s when I started high school. TN got a lot of snow then but it has been less and less over the years. The last major snow we had here was in ‘93 when we had the big blizzard. We aren’t equipped for snow. My County only has one snowplow. Everything shuts down. We aren’t allowed on the roads (for good reason). Snow here is incredibly wet and sticky. It sticks to tires like glue.

I’m retired now with nowhere to go so I would love to have a big snow.

That's a myth.

My Filipina wife LOVES winter in Pennsylvania.

Hand shovels the driveway because it's fun and healthy.

Ree Drummond?
Rae Drummond is “the pioneer woman”, largest single shareholder at Walmart and owner of one of the largest swathes of land in the us.

I wonder if it’s the same?

Pretty accurate for Maryland. We got almost no snow and milder-than-normal temps.
