ATLANTA — Channel 2 Action News has learned that a man is dead and another was injured during a shooting at a busy Buckhead shopping center.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. at the Peachtree Battle Shopping Center in the 2300 block of Peachtree Road.

Police said a man was coming out of one of the stores when he saw people breaking into his car. That’s when he confronted them and started shooting to defend himself.

Investigators said another man ran from the scene and was shooting off rounds as he ran. They located that person a short distance later.

In total, two people were shot. One was killed at the scene. The other was taken to a nearby hospital and was last listed as stable.

Branch Properties, which owns the shopping center, released a statement, saying:

“On Friday afternoon, the security team at Peachtree Battle Shopping Center responded to a situation that occurred in the parking lot. Our team was on-site and responded immediately and is continuing to work closely with the Atlanta Police Department. The safety of our guests is our top priority, and we are continuing to keep heightened security measures in place on-site.”

“[H]e confronted them and started shooting to defend himself’

Confronted them in the way of 'hey get away from my car'? Then one of the perps draws a gun and that's that.

>>Nothing in that guy’s car was more valuable than the life which was lost.<<

If the guy had a melted Snickers bar it was worth more than the scum who wanted to take his property.

I went to college there in the early 80's. MARTA was often jokingly said to mean "Moving Africans Rapidly Through Atlanta." It probably still is.

That's what we called it when I was at Tech in the late 70s too. But I thought that might be too unPC to bring up LOL.

Would I be considered prejudiced and a racist if I were to assume that the perps were the B in BIPOCs?

Before it was named MARTA, IT was Fulton Area Rapid Transit....No joke. FART. They obviously changed the name...

Does it run out to Decatur and Emory now?

The article is too poorly written for us to judge the sequence of events or what really happened. What level of danger the victim was subjected to before firing is omitted. Were someone engaged in robbing you to pull a gun, thus giving you reasonable cause to fear death or serious bodily harm, “self-defense” would apply, even if the victim fired first. The logical deduction from the article is that at least one of the robbers was armed, since he is said to have fired shots. Bringing a firearm to a break-in demonstrates the criminal’s plan to use deadly force to evade being caught, or to perpetrate armed robbery if circumstances evolved that way.

I used to go there a lot back in the 80s. Mainly to Oxford Books and the Silver Screen theater which showed oldies. I accidently left my car unlocked a couple of times and came back to find a door partly opened (didn’t have anything in the car).

I had my locked car broken into in front of the Rhodes Theater not far away, along with about 20 others, one evening while watching a double feature, ‘Two For The Road’ and ‘Shoot The Moon’. I’m sure crime is worse now, but even 40 years ago there were folks breaking into cars in that area.

Prepare yourself for the obligatory “Since when does breaking into a car warrant the death penalty?” cries.

Breaking into cars is a huge youth activity/job title, and has been, as you say, for decades. Most people in Atlanta don’t lock their car doors, in the hope of saving the window. Of course that doesn’t help if you walk up in the act.

I live in Western WA near Seattle. Similar to you, I have had a CPL for decades but did not carry on-body regularly. In the past, I did not carry often because it used to be very easy to avoid trouble spots. For example, by staying away from Belltown or a few other hotspots after Midnight.

Now I carry every time I leave the house.

I describe the Seattle/Tacoma area as lawless. It isn’t the wild-west out here but one should have no expectation of law enforcement. And, there always is the possibility of gang violence, junkie violence, road ragers, and so on, springing up at anytime at any place.

For example, just a few days ago a junkie shot a Winco employee after being asked to leave to the store. (Winco is a grocery store - this one is in Federal Way a suburb of Seattle.)

The Winco shooting and other recent violence validates everyday carrying even if one can avoid Seattle proper.

“No chance that will happen. Its in the middle of Atlanta with a heavy tax revenue. Atlanta will not let it go.”

Atlanta per se has no veto over the matter. Only two things need to happen: (1) approval by the Georgia General Assembly (2) approval by the voters in Buckhead

It’s kinda hard concealed carrying an AR, even an AR pistol.

My daily carry is a .40 caliber with 16 rounds. I mix the rounds in the magazine. Alternated with FMJ and HP of different amounts of powder.

I can assure you, if a person gets shot with a .40 in center mass they are done. I also have other weapons for home defense too that are definitely not pistols that are better suited for that kid of duty.

Just curious, what’s your go-to protection weapon of choice?
