Sri Lanka raids sugar stocks as food shortages bite

Sri Lankan government officials on Wednesday raided private warehouses to seize thousands of tonnes of sugar, a day after a state of emergency was declared over food shortages caused by a currency crisis.

A military officer put in charge of efforts to bolster food stocks said at least 13,000 tonnes of white and brown sugar were found in the raids.

"The objective is to prevent hoarding," Major General Senarath Niwunhella, who was named commissioner general of essential services on Tuesday, told AFP.

He denied the sugar was being confiscated.

"The government will pay a reasonable price to the importers based on the valuations provided to customs."

The general said importers had stockpiled sugar while market prices rose sharply.

"Today we started with sugar and will expand this action to other commodities like wheat flour and rice too if importers do not release their stocks to the market," he said.

What’s the country’s currency problem? It’s politicians pretty much sold the place to the Chinese. What could go wrong?

I used to work with Sri Lankan’s. Good men. Hard workers. It was funny, in a sad way, listening to them talk about all the corruption in their government. No different than here.

Same thing with the Iraqis, believe it or not.

Won’t be seizing much in the future. Nothing will be bunkered there. Add in that little issue of shipping time and... well... pooches have been screwed. It is not like most Sri Lankans have a high enough BMI to ride out one meal to the next, never mind the shortages just caused.

If they’re confiscating sugar, they’re doing more for public health than our pathetic government has ever done.

Food Nazi. Just because the Conagras of the world have used sugar like nicotine does not mean it is intrinsically bad. Even HFCS have merit in some things.

You can pry my guns and my giant slushy from my cold dead hands you damned keto vegan vagina steamer.

Been off of sugar since May. Lost a lot of weight and feel great. The cravings for something sweet during the first month or so were terrible.

What do you mean “off sugar?” I don’t use it for anything. no coffee, no sweets, no sugar in food, nothing. Have had the same box of C&H brown sugar for five years in my pantry, never touched.

Anyone with 5 year old sugar never cooks. No baking, and never a dessert. Never brined anything. Hell, even BBQ rub almost must contain sugar of some sort. (Turbanado and plain raw are best, not that refined crap they call brown with molasses spun back in for rubs.)

You must have someone else cook for you or you buy that prepared crap they call food or you just eat restaurant stuff where you just dont know what they put in.

Try to make some sort of iced confection without some form of sugar be it sucrose, glucose, maltose, fructose, lactose, dextrose or the myriad other types. I dare ya.

Will show up to help you build an igloo out of what you made.

;-)

ps. Inulin (both), sucralose (leakage) and the other non human digestible sugars dont count as they lead to the dreaded anal leakage and potential explosive decompression syndrome because you gave your gut biome an all you can eat buffet you can not digest and they will go to town and throw a humdinger of a p(f)arty.

I bought a couple pound bag a few years ago. It’s in my cupboard, as hard as a rock.
