WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to block a Texas ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, dealing a major blow to abortion rights and allowing a law prohibiting the vast majority of abortions in the state that took effect on Wednesday to remain in place.

I know many of my fellow Freepers despise my alma mater. Tonight I am very proud of my fellow Notre Dame alum, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who stood “tender, strong and true” with the unborn.

The articles say the standing of who is the defendant is at issue, because the law is solely based on allowing civil lawsuits. So that seems to have gotten them this temporary victory. Biggest problem I see with the logic of the law is that, if it holds up, there’s nothing stopping a liberal state from saying citizens can sue anyone who carries a firearm.

It seems like we’re still going to end up at the constitutional question in the end. And we’ll need 5 justices to say the constitution does not guarantee the right to an abortion. Do we know how this current block of 5 has voted on any past abortion cases? Gorsuch is the one I would be most worried about. Thomas, Alito and Barrett should all be solid gold on the issue.

I think Roberts is a young boy lover. He likes his junkets to Italy. They must have lots on him. And besides he takes his orders from W Bush.

What do youse guys think of the new law? This “private enforcement” thing is weird to me, I have no idea how it will work out.

Roberts voted with the liberals, the rest of “ours” held firm.

I don’t believe for a second anyone is blackmailing John Roberts. The fact is he’s a self-important asshole who isn’t very conservative.

yeah, but a very preliminary finding. Long way from home.

True enough. But could it be an indication of how they'll vote when they hear the case?

My feelings on abortion have shifted a bit since the pandemic started. Abortion stops a beating heart; it’s so obvious what it is—killing a human being. But then my whole life (a child of the 70s) I’ve been taught the Supreme Court found a “right” to choose, a right to have an abortion. And then in the 90s it was the era of “safe, legal and rare,” and it’s thankfully getting rarer still as teen pregnancies are down fortunately, and unwed motherhood is up (unfortunately), especially for women in their late 30s, who no longer choose abortion because there is no stigma. And ultrasounds show women that those babies are, well, babies.

But now, with so many rights stripped from me and my family here in the Soviet Union of CA: the right to go to in-person school, the right to go to school without being medically tested constantly, the right to go to school without a mask, the right to decline a vaccine, even the right to speak in the public squares of Twitter or Facebook . .I have even less sympathy for anyone’s declared “rights.” And men have ZERO reproductive rights (I have 3 brothers and 3 sons)—why is that? Why do so many men vote away THEIR rights?

I’ve lost any sympathy I may have ever had for the “right to choose.” We’ve lost so many rights over the past few years. “My body my choice—” yeah right.

“I don’t believe for a second anyone is blackmailing John Roberts. The fact is he’s a self-important asshole who isn’t very conservative.”

I completely agree. Roberts made clear a long time ago that he wants SCOTUS to be perceived as fair and non-partisan.

I think his decisions are made based on the win/loss record of the libs, and of the conservatives.

I believe he keeps track all the time. His biggest priority is to make sure the winning % for each team is close to .500 every year. He has few, if any, core convictions that run deep...at least that’s the way he comes across.

Up next, the DEMONCRATS will pack the Court.

I guess staying out of the fraudulent 2020 Election won’t help the SCOTUS from being converted into a DEMONCRAT Star Chamber.

I’m most concerned with Kavanaugh jumping to his best buddy’s (roberts) rescue. Gorsuch is going to be on the correct side of this.

Did anyone expect any different vote for Roberts?

This seems more like a procedural vote. The majority decision says the ruling is not actually a ruling on the Texas law’s validity, the SCOTUS is just refusing to block the law while appeals go forward.

If this law holds, it may be the single biggest deterrent to libtards moving to Texas.

22 out of 44 Democrat Senators voted to confirm John Roberts as Chief Justice in 2005.

Senator Joe Biden voted NO.

In my opinion, any time a Republican nominee gets more than 10 Democrat votes, it means that judge is politically suspect.

11% of Trump's Circuit Court judges got more than 10 Democrat votes.

43% of Trump's District Court judges got more than 10 Democrat votes.

I think Roberts will always vote the way the Deep State would vote. Unfortunately, we’ve reached a point in our country where the Deep State is almost always matching up with the progressive Left (ie. the Communists).
