The Government Is Giving Millions of Americans $50 a Month to Pay for Broadband Internet

Having trouble paying your internet bills during the pandemic? Let the government chip in. The Federal Communications Commission announced last week that about 5 million U.S. households have officially enrolled in the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, an initiative that provides up to $50 a month to help cover the cost of internet and digital devices for certain Americans. Launched in May, the limited-time-only program is intended to give low-income households a discount on broadband bills as the COVID-19 crisis wears on. So far, it’s proving popular: As of Aug. 29, over 4.9 million non-tribal and 107,000 tribal households were enrolled in the FCC internet discount program. (The distinction matters because tribal households can receive discounts as high as $75, whereas non-tribal households max out at $50.) States with the most residents taking advantage include California, where roughly 626,000 households have enrolled; Florida (about 335,000); New York (308,000); and Ohio (298,000). In Puerto Rico, some 209,000 households are benefiting from the EBB.

No enumerated power.

Progressivism is lawlessness.

Shouldn't we add up all the benefits these "low income" folks get first. Some are earning 50,000 or more in "benefits".

This is a subsidy for Google, Facebook, etc. More customers are now able to access their advertiser supported sites.

Big Tech should be footing this bill, not us.

Of course they do. They want absolutely everyone playing in their Matrix. That way they can control every bit of information one is exposed to.

We have a completely fiat, printed money, with a Federal Reserve that monetizes government debt - and for now anyway, the world accepts it! totally awesome!

Why would ANY DC politician or permanent bureaucrat not spend as much as much as they possibly can? What fool would dare say “no” - you can’t have that?

Its a fantastic system (until it ends)

Nothing in life is free.

Sooner or later, the government will call in their chips...and it probably won’t be pleasant for the current beneficiaries.

This is why there should be no progressive tax scale. Flat tax only.

If those who are now in the lower brackets actually had to contribute to these programs, the more the phones would be rining in congress to stop it.

And on and on and on.

$3 billion a year that if they negotiated even.a little could be cut to a third of that. My unnegotiated monthly internet bill for high speed internet is $20. Are they giving them Netflix or just cable tv too?

"food banks (many of which drive up to in their escalades donning full length leather jackets, full mani/pedi, tats and weave sucking on a mcdonalds shake."

First time I saw this happen locally, I was gobsmacked, a whole "fambly" dressed to the nines. There is one racial group with an inflated sense of entitlement. Tragedy of the commons.
