Chicago's new COVID-19 vaccine requirement has prompted a lot of school bus drivers to quit.
Chicago Public Schools said Sunday that 90 bus drivers quit between August 23-27. About 70 of those drivers quit on the same day.
“According to the bus companies, the rush of resignations was likely driven by the vaccination requirements," the school district said.
Like many districts across the country, CPS had anticipated a shortage of bus drivers before the city announced vaccination requirements. They had planned to work around the shortage by scheduling earlier pickups. But the loss of another 10 percent of drivers has left 2,100 students without a ride.
The district's answer? To pay students to find their own way: $1,000 for the first two weeks of school and $500 a month after that.
CPS said that the resignations has left the district with 770 school bus drivers. Ideally, they need another 500 more.
Good for them! We need much more of this. Stand strong, people!
Where are the NEA people complaining about funding that won’t be spent on children in the classroom?
$5,000/year buys tuition a some private and parochial schools. The left talks about sustainability. CPS is unsustainable.
Why not tap the talent at the prisons for drivers.

Some prisoners are especially ‘fond’ of children, too. I’m sure this would make sense to the Left. /s
Maybe they can add bus driving to Driver’s Ed
I presume a significant number of these drivers are black or are other minorities. Is there a civil rights violation here?
Can you imagine being a Chicago school bus driver?!? With the huge number of quality jobs going begging who would force themselves to take the jab over a lousy job like Chicago juvenile thug nursemaid?

step 1. Government enacts stupid one-size-fits-all rule.
step 2. Inevitable fallout occurs.
step 3. Repeat steps
Typical.
don’t quit. Force them to fire you!
This is a problem all over the us with shortage of school bus drivers.
The powers that be never think about the consequences of the decisions they make. People will hold elected officials accountable and remove them during the next election.
When going to school in Chicago never even seen a school bus We always used public transport (at a discounted rate)known as Chicago Surface Lines later as the CTA after the city bought them and thr L out

Vaccine mandates are real magic.
They make employees disappear!
Chicago Math..
2,100 students x $1,000 is $2,100,000
2,100 students x $500 is is $1,050,000
1 week at $2,100,000
35 weeks at $1,050,000 = $36,750,000
For a total cost of $38,850,000
Divided by 90 drivers lost is
$431,666 per bus driver...
Imagine making $18,500 per child or $74,000 per year for driving my 4 children to school. Think I’ll start a bus route!
More will wait to be fired so they can have their lawyer write up a wrongful termination letter as whitemail.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)and DOT used to require bus drivers to hold a CDL, I think that is still the case.
I wish them luck finding replacements that meet the requirements to get a CDL. There is a shortage of CDL holders for driving jobs that pay a lot more than bus drivers get.
The money they’ll be giving to students???? I had to double check that this wasn’t B🐝 article. No Uber or taxis will pick up students because they are not going to tip.
I saw a sign recently advertising for truck drivers: “$2500/week, drive locally, sleep in your own bed at night!”
Sounds better than being a school bus driver
Are they going to give money to the kids and parents, and hope they use the money to pay for Uber to go to school? Are they getting cash on the honor system? If so, what happens when somebody uses that cash for something else, and the kids don’t go to school?
