Following the withdrawal of the final U.S. troops from Afghanistan, a non-profit group is working to rescue dozens of military dogs abandoned at the Kabul airport.

Veteran Sheepdogs of America has been tasked with the responsibility of retrieving 51 military dogs. Indeed, a photo began circulating over the weekend of several dog carriers in front of a helicopter, however those crates represent just a small portion of the total number of furry friends left behind.

My only point was that people wanted to risk human lives to rescue dogs. In my opinion that is never an option no matter how well trained the dog is.

We are only as good as those we look after. It’s easy to cut losses and look for the way out. Hard men know what is right and will do it no matter the cost. In this case it was helpless animals who looked to us for their care that we turned our backs on. I’d run the gauntlet for them.

Then again I’d also do it for you. It’s the calling we warriors get that never goes away. We feel responsible for those around us.
