The United States military has a long and furry history with military working dogs (MWDs), and remarkably, the dogs usually outrank their human handlers. “It’s a matter of tradition as well as military custom. “The dog, being a non-commissioned officer, or NCO, would outrank or match in rank to their handler.”

My only point was that people wanted to risk human lives to rescue dogs. In my opinion that is never an option no matter how well trained the dog is.

We are only as good as those we look after. It’s easy to cut losses and look for the way out. Hard men know what is right and will do it no matter the cost. In this case it was helpless animals who looked to us for their care that we turned our backs on. I’d run the gauntlet for them.

Then again I’d also do it for you. It’s the calling we warriors get that never goes away. We feel responsible for those around us.
