The man who intentionally ran over a bicycling family three years ago was found not guilty by reason of insanity. Mikese Morse is now headed to a mental health facility for treatment instead of prison.
Hillsborough Judge Mark Kiser made it official Monday. "At this point, the court as entered a finding of not guilty by reason of insanity."
Doctors representing the state and the defense agreed Morse did not know right from wrong at the time of the crime.
"He did not know or appreciate the nature of his actions and the consequences, nor did he appreciate the wrongfulness of his behavior," testified clinical psychologist Dr. Ohiana Torrealday.
Back in summer of 2018, Morse was accused of intentionally running over a father and his two children who were riding bikes in Tampa. The father, Pedro Aguerreberry, was killed.
His children survived, but their mother Meghan says the scars are still there.
"For months after Pedro was killed, Lucas was afraid of going outside ‘where bad people are.’ There are no number of apologies or prayers that will ever convince me that the guy who did this is innocent. More than just a life was taken from us that day, " said Meghan Aguerreberry.
Morse, who attended the hearing virtually, spoke too.
"I really regret not getting the help I needed beforehand before this happened. I’m sincerely sorry for causing all this pain," said Morse.
However, Mikese's mother reminded the court her son did try to get help, even showing up to a police station and telling officers he was about to hurt someone. He was Baker Acted but released without proper treatment.
Michael Morse blames systemic racism for his son's lack of help in the mental health system.
"If my son was Tom Brady's son or a high-profile white guy, he would have never been dumped in the streets," claimed Morse.
Mikese Morse will be placed in the custody and care of the Department of Children and Families for treatment.
We need to learn from this. If someone goes to an authority and says that he is going to hurt someone, they need to be bound by law to check that person into the hospital and find out what is wrong. It’s nice to say put him in jail or execute him. Overtly mentally ill people do not belong in prison. That being said, he should not be let out for the rest of his life.
The guy showed up at a police station BEFORE the act saying he needed help because he wanted to kill people. They told him to sleep his insanity off.
bullsh!t...
The man who intentionally ran over a bicycling family three years ago was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Intentional but insane, huh? Look, this is a classic example of why I never tire of telling people that we do NOT live in a truly civilized country. Because in any TRULY civilized country this killer would have been tried, convicted, sentenced to death, and HANGED all within the time span of a month — OR LESS! Disgraceful!
There was a Quincy M.E. show that described what people should get: “Insane, But Guilty.”
Well that’s a relief. Now his victims aren’t as dead as if he’d been judged sane when he killed them.
But he was able to drive.
“If my son was Tom Brady’s son or a high-profile white guy, he would have never been dumped in the streets,” claimed Morse.”

Geezus H. Crimaney! If the police would have detained him on a 5150, the father would have still cried racism. F’ him and his BOY.
SPJNK.
“telling officers he was about to hurt someone”
Maybe he really only asked to use the bathroom.
Any legal types here who can speculate as to what typically happens with people like this?
How long are they usually treated in the mental health facility and are they in a lock down when being treated?
I wonder what will happen when he is judged to be “cured” and released? Perhaps a member of the murdered guys family will see him one day and do the right thing and see that real justice is done.
It used to be called mental institutions. Insane folk need to be set apart from general society(for their own safety and the safety of society). No hatred or prejudice...but they are too dangerous to themselves and others. Until we can find out why mental disease happens and how to control it.
The weak, and inadequate societal response to this human issue invites more innocent mayhem and death.
Sure would be a shame if [redacted] and then switched [redacted].
The proper response to murderous insanity is to euthanize the lunatic.
I might have known...
If this is the standard that we go by, no crime committed by any Democrat should ever be punished.
I agree... If this had been a white guy running down a black father and son it would have been classed as a “Hate Crime”.
I just read another article claiming that hate crimes have risen and are attributed to “white Supremacists”.
Either the FBI report is pure disinformation or they have discounted all the attacks like this and others by Black’s attacking Asians, Whites on a consistent basis.
The article says he was Baker Acted but released without proper treatment.
In Florida that means you’re committed for an involuntary 72-hour mental health examination.
So it wasn’t the Police, it was the “Social Workers” that released him to murder.
