A record number of container ships are stuck waiting to enter California’s two largest ports as labor shortages and COVID-19 disruptions continue to roil a supply chain that’s being pushed to its limits ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.
A total of 46 freight ships are at anchor or in a drift area waiting to enter the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the Marine Exchange of Southern California, which operates the Vessel Traffic Service for those two ports, reported late Monday evening.
“Trend at anchor and in drift areas is essentially steady next 3 days,” the group said in a statement. “Through it all, port partners are keeping your Marine Transportation System safe, secure, reliable, and environmentally sound, despite not being efficient at this time due to the backup.”

Where did the labor force go?
Staying at home collecting COVID benefits ?
Could certainly be where some of them are.
How much longer will that string out? Maybe forever, in CA. :-(
Kinda reminds me of the oil shortages in the 70’s. Story is we had the oil. We just had to wait in line at the gas stations.
During the strike in 2002, I learned as a young logistics manager in an international company not to route any shipments to those ports and have been doing it ever since. COSCO favors places like Lowes or Wal-Mart that can fill a full train with containers, not schmucks like who I worked for that can fill four or five containers a month.
Once we started paying a little more for alternative ports (including those on the east coast), most of my shipping headaches magically vanished. Why do you suppose that is?
“Where did the labor force go?”
Gavin Newsom extended the Covid benefits to January. Who cares that we have a labor shortage? I’ve had to put on my patience hat. Typical customer service has been frustratingly slow due to the shortages. Everywhere I go there are “for hire” signs and advertisements for job fairs. You would have to be blind to not see them. It was purely political on Newsom’s part in order to gain favor amidst the recall election.
How much ammo is sitting out there?
My wife and I wife recently took a road trip from North Dallas TX to Taos New Mexico...
Every single gas station, retail store, hotel, diner, and small business had a “Now Hiring” or “Help Wanted” sign in their window... EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
The one in front of the McDonald’s touted the $13/hour starting wage... Surreality.
We see the same “Now Hiring” signs, all over TX....and, Abbott stopped the additional $300/mo CV payments.
🤷♀️
I believe it!
See my post 12.
I think Covid protections end September 4th.
There’s no way the benefits exceed the pay of union Longshoremen.
Unrelated, but is Taos NM where there is some humming sound or something like that?
True enough. And the local free advertising papers aren’t trying to drum up business; they are almost exclusively advertising their available jobs.
Nobody here wants to work, there are signs everywhere near the port for DRIVERS WANTED!!
One of the side affects of the COVID lie is to drive up the minimum wage, increase prices, bankrupt some financial areas.
Re: Taos NM & humming
That is the claim by some people. I’ve spent a fair amount of time as a tourist in that area and haven’t experienced/noticed it. I guess my internal frequency just isn’t tuned that way.
Did you try taking peyote and chasing it with a joint?
