The public school system in America is in crisis — the worst crisis since the forced bussing and integration issues of the 1970s.
Simply put, parents and students have lost faith in the school system to educate. They doubt whether the schools have the best interests of their students at heart. This poisonous doubt is having a tangible effect on enrollment. Despite the fact that public education is free, parents are sending their children to private schools with more reliable, more predictable policies.
Enrollment in public schools nationwide declined by 3 percent last year. But it was the numbers for kindergarten enrollment that should chill the blood of teachers’ unions and school district officials. Kindergarten enrollment tanked by 13 percent last year, and it’s only expected to get worse this year.
One school district in Brooklyn, New York, has seen its rosters fall from 345 students in 2018–19 to a projected 225 this September, with kindergarten enrollment collapsing from 76 to 37. Because school funding is pegged to enrollment, that school stands to lose a sizable chunk of its funding — funds to pay teachers and other support staff.
And yes, it’s not the pandemic itself that’s causing the collapse in enrollment. It’s the policies put in place to assuage the desires of teachers.

Throw CRT and teaching all forms of sexual perversions on top of that. And young adults at my church are talking about learning that the Texas voting law is a return to Jim Crow laws.
>> The only people who should pay for schools are parents with kids that need an education.
Children are tomorrow’s taxpayers, engineers, workers — those most will rely upon at some point.
Having the right to petition for the related “local tax” exemptions would be a fare compromise however.
Would be cool to have the option to select which taxes we’re to pay.
The sports obsession costs a bunch too. The expensive sports related facilities and equipment, INSURANCE, coaching pay, Yes there are boosters that help fund it, but it’s all for maybe a fourth of the kids that want to play a sport. The parents become so sports obsessed it’s ridiculous, “Gotta get that college scholarship.”
There was a guy at my high school that was a natural athlete, but was satisfied just playing in P.E., and at the park. The coaches were bummed that he wouldn’t play interscholastic. His reason: he just couldn’t see why it was such a big deal to people.
Home schooling parents should all reduce their property tax payments a like amount of the school assessment. Then listen to them howl.
Only under socialism. Get rid of socialism and one has nothing to do with the other.
Jimmy Carter’s WORST of his terrible policies. Time to abolish the Department of Education as close to immediately as possible.
America survived virtually all of his rotten policies except the DOE.
Boy, you got that right my friend.
I’m just looking at my property tax bill that is due 10/1. My C(r)ook County tax bill says 68.11% of my taxes go to public education.
Now, we live in the suburbs but my wife and I are retired and our children are grown and on their own. We put them through Catholic schools and paid a pretty penny. An investment we do not regret.
But now, I say enough is enough and I’m done with it.
Years ago when my son was in grade school in the late 70s and early 80s people got a $2,000 a year tax writeoff if their child was not in public school. Since back then the private school was $3,000 a year it was kind of a no-brainer to send your kid to private school.
By the time he got to high school, our betters had done away with the tax write-off. Likely that was just to make it difficult for middle class people to have their kids mingle in with the uber rich who don’t need a tax write-off.
Add another straw, CRT.
When teachers say they hate you, believe them!

“There is starting to be an inherent distrust for school boards, that there’s some notion that we are out to indoctrinate children or to undermine parents or things like that, when we are on the same team,”

The “inherent distrust” is the result of what parents are learning everyday about the arrogance and deceitfulness of school board members all across the country, and the intentional misrepresentation of America, its history, and its people. Parents understand very clearly that you people are NOT performing your duties in the interest of parents or of the America that they have loved, fought for, and died for ever since its founding. The vast majority of teachers today have been indoctrinated by the leftists in this country and by their filthy union overlords who don’t give a damn about the welfare of our children or their country. You and your ilk are despicable and unworthy any respect whatsoever.
We used to have that here in my state but it was a credit to your non-taxable income and didn’t come off of your bottom line taxes due. To me, if I’m not using a service why should I have to pay for other people’s kids, especially if I’m paying to send them to private school to get the education that used to be taught in public education.
“why should I have to pay for other people’s kids,”
Especially when other people’s kids in public school are learning how to despise your kids.
Had that here in my WV county until a couple of years ago.
The 911 maping ended up quite a boondoggle. Went through three maping companies over as many years before it was finalized. Even then, my Redest of Red county needed folks to call at the sheriff’s office to properly locate our abodes on their maps. RATs ain’t the only ones who come up with ways to fleece the taxpayer at every turn while screwing things up.
Best part was it cost a bundle to DMV to change the addresses on licenses, registrations and titles for vehicles, boats, trailers etc.
Wrong. The U.S. has one of the most expensive education systems in the world....funded by taxpayers.
The author's statement is symbolic of today's state of education: void of critical thinking, reason, logic, and ethics.
Walk into a public school and ask one of the office employees a question requiring personal initiative and unprogrammed thought. Like telling jokes on a Borg ship.
And your tax line item for “schools” won’t go down because there aren’t many variable costs in education.
CRT and all the hate-America woke BS got kicked I to overdrive concurrently with COVID. There are a lot of last straws all at once.
Wonderful news! we need more of this
Then what’s this thing on my property taxes labeled “School system,” the amount of which is the largest dollar item on the tax bill?

94% of my property tax.
