A Deserved 'Moment of Truth' for Public Schools as a Record Number of Parents Opt Out
PJ Media ^ | Aug 29, 2021 | Rick Moran

The public school system in America is in crisis — the worst crisis since the forced bussing and integration issues of the 1970s.

Simply put, parents and students have lost faith in the school system to educate. They doubt whether the schools have the best interests of their students at heart. This poisonous doubt is having a tangible effect on enrollment. Despite the fact that public education is free, parents are sending their children to private schools with more reliable, more predictable policies.

Enrollment in public schools nationwide declined by 3 percent last year. But it was the numbers for kindergarten enrollment that should chill the blood of teachers’ unions and school district officials. Kindergarten enrollment tanked by 13 percent last year, and it’s only expected to get worse this year.

One school district in Brooklyn, New York, has seen its rosters fall from 345 students in 2018–19 to a projected 225 this September, with kindergarten enrollment collapsing from 76 to 37. Because school funding is pegged to enrollment, that school stands to lose a sizable chunk of its funding — funds to pay teachers and other support staff.

And yes, it’s not the pandemic itself that’s causing the collapse in enrollment. It’s the policies put in place to assuage the desires of teachers.

From the Stanford/NYT article quoted in the article: (spelling corrected)Free? Hmmm. Then what's this thing on my property taxes labeled "School system," the amount of which is the largest dollar item on the tax bill?

Forced masking and “vaccination” are the final straws.

"Despite the fact that public education is free"

WTF!

Flush your headgear out PJmedia! Yes it's free for 10k a year in perpetual never ending and always increasing property taxes. We have totally forfeited the concept of private property rights primarily to fund this "free" public school system.

This needs to end ASAP. All education should be private with zero government involvement. If you don't have kids you should not be paying for schools. When your kids are done with school you should not be paying for schools.

” public education is free “

That’s like the reporter mentioning to Jen Psaki that the government flights from Afghanistan are free — and Psaki not telling her that they’re not free at all.

COVID hysteria anvil with white-shaming hammer.

Virtual nonsense, inactivity, lack of relationships, and then, America-shaming, straining relationships because everyone should see their colors and either shame or prop up the other students based on that.

Yes, that’s what everyone wants.

Exactly. I was willing to let that skate.

But, EVERYONE who pays taxes pays for education. Parents of current students as well as those who never have children and who have long retired.

It is time for separation of school and state.

Yes it's free for 10k a year in perpetual never ending and always increasing property taxes

Rural MO, 15.5 acres, $42.00 per year property tax. Schools aren't the best but aren't teaching CRT. Go ahead and keep supporting the enemy.

Free? It would be expensive if they paid people to use it.

Agree 1000%.

Why pay for something that one will never use, or are no longer using?

Public education is Free? Nothing in the universe is “free.” Someone always pays… whether it be in dollars or sweat.

Generally I’d agree with you, but consider who is going to be paying your social security and Medicare? Those kids when they grow up. Every kid should be able to be educated for free K-12 all we have to do is change how it is funded. Let the parents decide which schools to send their kids to. School choice. Money follows the kids. As long as the school is effective in teaching the basics, that works for the kids.
There are going to be drop-outs, troubled kids et al, but that is what schooling professionals are trained to deal with.
The schools that are good at it will prosper. The employees of the failures will flip burgers to pay for their BA degrees.

Simply zoned AG if anything. Can’t really call it an exemption since most of the State is this way. No building dept or codes, no restrictions.

The previous county we lived in had no physical addresses or 911 service. If you called, someone from the nearest city PD might answer. Mailing addresses were for and made up by USPS for mail delivery. RR 2 box 305 = Rural Route 2, mailbox #305. Ebay sellers would freak out seeing Box 305 and assume it was a PO box.

Wild, Wild West.

“Every kid should be able to be educated for free K-12 all we have to do is change how it is funded. “

This statement fails the logic test. There is no such thing as “free”. Your statement literally says all kids should be educated through the 12th grade and someone else should pay for it. So back to square one. The only people who should pay for schools are parents with kids that need an education. Leave everyone else out of it.

A simple yet interesting proposition. When the schools of the State trample on the ideals of the Church it is no different than the Church dictating to government.

You may be referring to vaccines and masks but I’m also applying it to CRT and “trans” messaging. If the State can’t police itself then public schools should be abolished.
