The North Carolina Senate approved a bill this week that would raise the stakes for those who engage in a riot that results in damage or injury.
A person could face criminal charges and jail time if the rioter causes damage to property, or assaults a citizen or emergency personnel, during a protest or a state of emergency.
The bill has been returned to the House where, if concurred, it will then go to the office of Gov. Roy Cooper to be signed, or vetoed.
Republican House Speaker Tim Moore, one of the sponsors of the bill, said in a press release that he had witnessed “the violence and destruction caused by rioters right here in downtown Raleigh” in 2020.
“What this bill does is enforce harsher penalties for the perpetrators of violence and looting, while preserving every North Carolinian’s right to protest peacefully,” Moore said. “Our rights to free speech and assembly are precious and must be preserved, but never at the expense of harm to others. House Bill 805 simply ensures the safety of our citizens while upholding their rights to free speech and assembly.”
House Bill 805 defines a riot as “a public disturbance involving an assemblage of three or more persons, which by disorderly and violent conduct, or the imminent threat of disorderly and violent conduct,” which results in “injury or damage to persons or property or creates a clear and present danger of injury or damage to persons or property.”

Good
Some of these idiot apologists have said that the riots from last year were peaceful, and that just a couple of buildings caught on fire, and anyway, it was righteous outrage about George Floyd, etc, etc.
Sometimes it seems we live in different world, the liberal radical types occupying their own world. And that they have a weak grasp of reality sometimes.
Unless they are nonwhite.
Wonder what Gov Stoopid will do. He surprised me with the passing of the “you can’t vax a minor without parental consent” bill. But make no mistake, he’s a rat.
So begore thus people who damaged property or hurt people during a riot did NOT face criminal charges?????
Good.
There is no issue, anywhere, in any context, that justifies blocking a street, damaging property, or impeding my egress *anywhere*. Anything other than a scheduled, permitted, and peaceful and orderly protest should be met by warthogs and ma duces.
I’d say good, but that is a very poorly written law and it’s ripe for abuse by government.
“Unless they are nonwhite.”
Exactly. Is this law going to be applied evenly without the scales of justice being tipped?
I think perhaps They aught to add on charges of domestic terrorism where it applies too. People are genuinely terrorized by extremely violent mobs coming at them and assaulting them when the folks are unable to defend themselves. Mobs going into resteraunts and terrorizing patrons sh8ould have escalated charges of domestic terrorism tacked on too, depending on circumstances such as assault. These are organized domestic terrorists doing these things, not simple protestors trying to make a statement without violence.
If Nancy and ilk can charge peaceful protestors who went on a guided tour of the Capitol with ‘insurrection’, then mobs of violent criminals assaulting peaceful citizens should be charged with domestic terrorism or something as harsh
BLM, antifa and bearded savages exempt.
When the Right, A/K/A, supporters of President Trump protest. The Authorities refer to it as rioting.
When the Authorities announce increased and enhanced penalties for "Rioters" the idiots on the Right yell, " "Whoopee"! Never realizing that such penalties are aimed and directed toward them.
Just in time for conservatives to run out of cheeks to turn.
Whites only
I expect the democrat taliban party of North Carolina will do all they can to scuttle this bill from becoming law.
