Russia will not attempt a military intervention in Afghanistan, as the country has “learned the lesson” from its previous failed attempts to invade it, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday.
“We are keeping a close eye on this situation, actively cooperating with our allies in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO),” Putin assured. The CSTO is a regional military alliance of former Soviet republics led by Moscow.
“Naturally, we will not interfere in Afghanistan’s domestic affairs, neither will our armed forces be drawn into this all-against-all conflict. I think this is what is going on there,” Putin said Tuesday. He then recalled that “the conflict in Afghanistan has been smoldering for decades,” according to Russia’s state-owned news agency, TASS.
“The former Soviet Union has its own experience in that country. We have learned the lesson,” Putin asserted.
The former Soviet Union intervened in Afghanistan in 1979 to support the country’s then-communist government as it fought against anti-communist Muslim guerrilla groups during the Afghan War (1978–1992).
Putin on July 5 assured Tajikistan President Emomali Rakhmon that Moscow would provide “all necessary support” to Tajikistan as it confronted a then-unfolding security threat from Afghanistan, with which it shares an 843-mile-long border. The Taliban at the time was sweeping across the country as part of a successful military campaign to reconquer major cities and provinces on its way to toppling Kabul. Afghan

In half the time it took us.
Funny how this country leaders never looked at the Russian and British experiences in Afghanistan...or just though they were smarter..IYIs all
I don’t believe this. Putin will make a power play. In time. Or is he waiting for China to do the dirty work?
Face it, Bush is an idiot that believes Islam is a religion of peace in the face of 1399 years of history.
China will make a play for one side, Russia will then quietly support another. It goes on and on.
Well, now it’s China’s turn to stick their wang in crazy.
It was motivated by profit. Former President Eisenhower warned us about the military/industrial complex. We didn’t listen to him then. Hence the ‘SWAMP’=
the Gov./Military/Industrial complex.
And now the industrial part includes the healthcare industry.
“Well, now it’s China’s turn to stick their wang in crazy.”
Let’s see how well they do there.

We didn’t have a choice but to go in after 9/11 and we won the damn war when we killed Bin Laden. Nation building is what failed.
Putin always has something up his sleeve and plays poker well as opposed to the USA that has always a been mark.
“Funny how this country leaders never looked at the Russian and British experiences in Afghanistan...or just though they were smarter..IYIs all”
In 2001 we arrogantly believed we could do anything. We had won the Cold War, balanced the budget, and invented the internet.
Pride goeth before the fall is an old lesson, but one that is true every time.
“Let’s see how well they do there.”
They have “different” ROE’s than we do!
At least Putin is honest with himself. I like the guy. I like the Russian military. Yes I have worked with them. What most Americans don’t like about the Russians is they are BRUTALLY Honest. The woke culture can’t deal with that.
I heard from military intelligence types that Afghanistan has been the CIA’s money bag and opium distributing hub for these 20 years and that Trump decided to shut it down finally
One can’t doubt that the kid diddlers also have a hand in this
It’s a Slavic thing, not just Russians.
It actually makes sense that Afghanistan be broken up in 4 or 5 different countries. With the Talinban/Pashtun area uniting with Pakistan. The Northern Alliance area uniting with the Uzbec’s and Kazac’s , etc.
The British arbitrarily drew lines and F’d up the whole region. Similar to Iraq/Turkey/Iran/Jordan/Kuwait after WWI.
They left out Kurdistan.
Sly, backhanded, clandestine. It’s politics. Dad ran for Congress. Got sorely defeated. I am thankful now.
“Well, now it’s China’s turn to stick their wang in crazy.”
China won’t hesitate to wipe out half the Afghan populace to cow the other half. They will then trim the herd as needed to keep things calm.
Brutal, but it works.
