At the end of May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a notable, yet mostly ignored, large-scale study of COVID transmission in American schools. A few major news outlets covered its release by briefly reiterating the study’s summary: that masking then-unvaccinated teachers and improving ventilation with more fresh air were associated with a lower incidence of the virus in schools. Those are common-sense measures, and the fact that they seem to work is reassuring but not surprising. Other findings of equal importance in the study, however, were absent from the summary and not widely reported. These findings cast doubt on the impact of many of the most common mitigation measures in American schools. Distancing, hybrid models, classroom barriers, HEPA filters, and, most notably, requiring student masking were each found to not have a statistically significant benefit. In other words, these measures could not be said to be effective.

Masking at home is more insane than the other insanities! One even wanted kids to wear masks while sleeping!
Masks for such long periods by little kids is hazardous to their physical and mental health. Parents should be revolting but alas...
The headline says the “science” is “uncertain,” but that conclusion is hardly supported by the article. The only serious examinations of the evidence noted by the article show no statistical benefit. The only support cited for masks in schools are pronouncements from pseudo-scientific organizations like the AAP.
When my son was small and we’d go to the grocery store, I’d have him hold on to the side of the grocery cart, as his little sister needed the basket “seat”. He’s 53 now, a successful computer programmer and very much his own man. When I go to the grocery store with him now, he will hold on to the grocery cart. Conditioning is a lifelong thing.
They have scared most parents...so the schools say mask up...
They do not work
Children are being sentenced to another round of unnecessary mask mandates and probably more school closures based on evidence-free warnings from Anthony Fauci and others that the Delta variant will be more deadly to them than the original virus. While the variant is more infectious, the evidence does not show it to be any more lethal. In fact, the current mortality rate among American children with Covid is lower than it was last year—and last year many more children died of the flu than of Covid. One of the most thorough studies, in England, shows that the survival rate for those under 18 with Covid is 99.995 percent. But instead of emphasizing these reassuring statistics, public-health officials like Jerome Adams, the former surgeon general, keep looking for new ways to scare parents and children.
The sight of a child in a mask makes my stomach turn every time I see it.
You’re right.... but, getting “uncertain” in a New York Mag headline is a start in the right direction. In the article, they do actually admit (albeit, not headlined) that the study shows no statistical benefit.
And, it does a good job of detailing the downside of masks for children.
Me too. A few months ago, when they finally stopped requiring masks in our church, I sat in the choir loft looking out on 1000+ adults, with NO masks. Then, they called the children to the front, and ALL of the 20 or so that came up still had their masks on.
I nearly cried.
We never had mandates but the kids were encouraged to wear masks in school. We had an Indoor high school graduation in May. Approximately 2,400 parents, grandparents and others in the audience with about 10 percent masking. 450 kids receiving diplomas with about 70% masking. Conform conform conform!
The beatings will continue until morale improves!
Europe does not mask its school children….what do they know that we don’t?
The science is not “uncertain.” There is no scientific support for this insanity at all - but lots good reasons not to subject kids to this.
