China will now allow married couples to legally have a third kid amid concerns that its shrinking number of working-age people will threaten the country’s future prosperity and global influence.
The ceremonial legislature updated the Population and Family Planning Law on Friday to address the consequences of the plummeting birthrate.
China has tried for decades to control the population, beginning with a policy imposed in 1979 that strictly limited couples to one child.
Couples who didn’t follow the rule faced fines or loss of jobs — and in some cases, mothers were forced to undergo abortions.
A preference for sons also led parents to kill baby girls, causing a massive imbalance in the sex ratio.
The number of working-age people, meanwhile, has fallen over the past decade and the population has barely grown, adding more strain to an aging society.
Chinese people over 60 accounted for 18.7% of the country’s total population in 2020, 5.44 percentage points higher than in 2010. Meanwhile, the working-age population in the country fell to 63.3% from 70.1% a decade ago.
With growing fears that the country would grow old before it became wealthy, the family planning rules were changed for the first time in 2015 to allow two children.

They are gearing up for a protracted war.
The Chinese government faces the same problem which Western societies face: high-IQ women who would rather have the affluent lifestyle that a two-income household allows, rather than staying home raising kids.
But China has ways of getting compliance.
I wish the two rudest peoples in the world, Chinese and Indians, would nuke each other…
Might be too late.
It has been my observation that the second income is pretty much absorbed by the costs, i.e. transportation, clothes, child-care, etc., of the second income.
Never mind the fact that a stay-at-home parent takes much better care of a child than some minimum wage "child care" facility.
You must have had encounters on subway station platforms, like me. Patiently waiting in line for the subway train to arrive, and the doors to open, only to be shoved aside at that moment by Chinese women with bags of food. And they weren't in line.
It is too late. The large and expanding middle class doesn’t want to spend money on more kids.

Not a fan of either. The “whiter” Indians of at least third generation are okay.
RE: intelligent Chinese women not wanting to stay home with kids....
They probably have the same types of husbands as Americans.
Lazy, in undershirt and boxer shorts and slippers, not looking for a job, all day in front of the big screen TV watching mixed martial arts and old sitcom reruns, with huge bowls of pork rinds and Cheetos and plenty of cold Tsingtao, Snow, Yanjing or Harbin Beer.
Let him take care of the kids.

Or it could be that China expects a *lot* more Lebensraum very soon.
Good. However the one child policy has led to a shortage of females (birthing persons).
