Orlando urges reduced water usage as liquid oxygen used to purify water goes to COVID patients
Orlando Sentinel ^ | August 20, 2021 | Kevin Spear

Posted on 08/20/2021 2:12:49 PM PDT by Stravinsky

The city of Orlando and its water utility made an urgent appeal Friday afternoon for residents to cut back sharply on water usage for weeks because of a pandemic-triggered shortage of liquid oxygen used to purify water.

If commercial and residential customers are unable to reduce water usage quickly and sufficiently, Orlando Utilities Commission may issue a system-wide alert for boiling water needed for drinking and cooking. Without reductions in water usage, a boil-water alert would come within a week, utility officials said.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer asked residents to immediately stop watering their lawns, washing their cars and using pressure washers. Landscape irrigation consumes about 40% of the water provided by OUC.

Maybe they need better purchasing agents.

... I’m very skeptical of this announcement.

Orlando’s a blue city right? This sounds like a direct order to induce fear and panic.

Blue yes. Had not previously heard this announcement locally. There are a lot of municipalities in the area. I wonder why it’s just Orlando.

No way. Water treatment plants should be using Ozone to help purify water, not liquid oxygen. It’s much more effective and is produced by an ozonization machine which can also easily be rigged to convert O3 to O2.

Hi.

Interesting. Airgas (airgas.com) doesn’t seem to have a problem with liq O2.

Maybe I read the article incorrectly?

Local news was going nuts about this on the nightly news. Debated whether to post it, but decided yes because this story will probably be used by the national media shortly to once again slam DeSantis.

I’m in Texas, we make oxygen! There is a difference between medical grade and industrial gas, but there does not appear to be a shortage. Just another Lib mayor trying to be a Nazi!

Local news had a huge “breaking news” bit about it. You would think it was the apocalypse.

The oxygen shortage problem has been known about a long time.

Potential Solutions to the COVID-19 Oxygen Crisis in the United States, January 26, 2021.

This is the first I've heard of medical oxygen supply being so high it is threatening other industries such as water treatment.

From the Johns Hopkins article posted above...

Oxygen shortages are occurring because a large number of patients require oxygen therapy as part of their COVID-19 treatment. Over the course of the pandemic, medical providers have seen the survival benefits of providing high flow nasal oxygen, rather than mechanical ventilation, to many COVID-19 patients. The challenge is that high flow oxygen therapy uses roughly 5 to 10 times the amount of oxygen as a mechanical ventilator. The resulting high flow of oxygen through hospital oxygen systems is causing liquid oxygen vaporizers to freeze over. These vaporizers, which convert a hospital’s stored liquid oxygen to gas for the hospital’s oxygen systems, are located outside of the building next to tanks where bulk liquid oxygen is stored. Additionally, oxygen pipes in many older hospitals are not able to accommodate the increased flow demands due to design limitations. To reduce the draw on the wall oxygen in hospitals, portable oxygen is being used, especially in alternate treatment sites; however, the increased use of portable oxygen is contributing to a shortage of oxygen cylinders of all sizes. Timely oxygen delivery to hospitals has also been a problem, and oxygen flow regulators, which are needed for both wall oxygen and portable oxygen tanks, are in critically short supply.
So oxygen therapy keeps you off of intubation -- that's good.

I'm very surprised to learn that medical oxygen, even at the higher rates of high flow oxygen therapy, puts such a demand on the entire USA oxygen supply.

We have far too many people in this country who ENJOY being in a constant state of panic, and who do their best to panic others.
The renewed fear porn is working. Here in rural Missouri last month, only about 10% of people I saw in stores were wearing masks; lately it’s been back to at least 50%. And mask ads are popping up again on most sites I visit.

Democrat managers slowly mismanage resources till a crisis occurs. Then they demand more resources or others to do with less.

It’s the first play in every book.

I am not that far from Orlando (60 minutes) and it has rained often here during the last month, the lawn rarely needed watering.
