All remaining Americans in Afghanistan are being told to make their own way to Kabul airport now to be flown home and are being told that it is safe for them to make the journey despite widespread fears on the ground that the Taliban will stop them, hold them hostage or kill them.
There are still some 11,000 Americans in Afghanistan waiting to be flown home. Some are at the airport but some are too afraid to make their way there through Taliban-controlled streets. Some say they have tried and have been turned away at checkpoints.
There are also tens of thousands of Afghan nationals desperate to get out but who do not want to present themselves to the terrorists they worked against for years.
The only way anyone in Kabul can get to the airport is if the Taliban lets them through.

If I were one of them, I’d be more afraid of the Afghans around the airport desperate to get out than the Taliban in the streets. There are a lot of very angry folks who feel betrayed around that airport right now.

That means Taliban are giving the orders to Biden. They are saying US personnel can’t move around, but civilians can go to the airport at their mercy. Who knows how many will make it or instead might be waylaid by bad actors. Bad guys will be expecting those Americans to have all their cash on them.

Don't think CNN or others won't do whatever is necessary to keep an office in Kabul. CNN was complicit after The Gulf War. They refused to report the atrocities of Saddam Hussein and his sons, despite having first-hand knowledge of them, all because they wanted to keep their bureau office in Baghdad.

These folks are so screwed. Simple surrender is pointless, as there is no certainty as to any expected exchange sometime down the road, or ransom payment, and as things get crowded, liquidation with extreme prejudice is the next step.
Some will get out, but many more will not. They will simply be “disappeared”.
