A bill aimed at converting commercial properties into residential ones was quietly signed into law late last week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The measures is meant to increase housing options through a targeted effort. Distressed hotels, shopping centers, and other commercial buildings could all be converted into much needed housing.
Throughout the state there is a lack of affordable, and even median income housing. It’s part of the Housing Our Neighbors with Dignity Act.

They were building these people nice new edifices, but then
the tenants destroyed them in short order.
They lived like animals in them. They broke doors, poked
gaping holes in walls dumped dirt in their toilets, let their
bathtubs overflow.
It’s a lost cause trying to help these people.
It’s the best example of a societal pocket of complete
social breakdown.
Leftists, hey, I’ve got a great idea, let’s try it again!
*Great Society, a fine book by Amity Shlaes*
Shlaes was happy Biden won.
What a good movie.
Wasn’t happy about watching on a laptop, but still good.
I was looking at production costs. $1.35 million for “Silent Running,” $1.8 M for “The French Connection,” $4 M for “Dirty Harry.”
...and I just discovered that I *could* have “casted” it to the tv.
oof
Thanks for that dirty secret I never heard. She is now on my S list.
I was only talking about the book with the common enemy of socialist LBJ programs for urban areas. Thanks again.
The trick is to let the people OWN their own little slice of it. The legal concept is Tenancy In Common.

In the category of TICs with usage rights, there are: (i) “space-assignment co-ownerships” (or “SACOs”), which are intended to have the look and feel of condominiums or other legal subdivisions, and assign particular houses, apartments, rooms, offices, stores, or storage spaces to each owner;
In the late 1970s there were townhouses newly built in a rather large development by the government in Michigan near here. In short order they were looking like rundown Liberian shacks.
One day my friend saw a duel of Cadillacs there. Crowd watched. A Male and female reved up their cars at the ends of the streets, burned rubber and rammed each other's front ends until finally one couldn't drive and lost. True story.
I learned then I was right that it wasn't the whiny complaint "look at the age of the 1900s buildings falling to pieces that we have in the areas burned in the 1967 riots in Detroit." Yes, but several areas kept them up and remodeled them.
And in Windsor, Ontario across the Detroit River similar old ones were in fine shape. And I remember sitting in a passenger train there waiting for a few minutes as I was looking out the window and could see shopkeepers outside with pails of soapy water and big brushes washing the windows and sides of the stores. One fellow was scrubbing the sidewalk. In Detroit the same day people were sitting half asleep on the porches.
So now we know where they’re putting all those Afghani muslims. Republican communities with some vacant storefronts will be the first to fill up.
Will they actually be using the mall building? In Totem Lake (Kirkland, WA) they tore down the mall and put in 5 story buildings.
And of course Jay Inslee has bought up something like 18 old motels to “solve” the homeless problem.
It’s like our people are so ungrateful.
Some places may keep their units nice. I doubt many do.
It’s an attitude as much as anything else.
The units you mentioned across in Canada seem to be run
more wisely than ours are.
Here in Montgomery county Maryland they want to buy houses in affluent area and change them into section 8 housing!
I bet the progressive NIMBYs will scream bloody murder.
Just borrowed it from digital library. Thanks for the suggestion.
FReeper informed by the author Amity Shlaes was happy Biden was elected.
News to me.
Didn’t you know? He was knocked off in the Hateful Eight.😋
He died in The Wild Angels but soon came back as a tree hugging space hippy.
The man is immortal.
:D
If you said it’s a good book, I’m reading it. I read the comment and that poster is a buzzkill. No time for those.
