KABUL, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Taliban fighters in the Afghan capital, Kabul, started collecting weapons from civilians on Monday because people no longer need them for personal protection, a Taliban official said.

"We understand people kept weapons for personal safety. They can now feel safe. We are not here to harm innocent civilians," the official told Reuters.

About twenty years ago, visiting a buddy in the UK and about five years after they banned firearms in the UK, we walked by a store that was selling plastic ‘souvenirs’ of every kind of firearm you could imagine. Rifles, pistols, 50 cal MGs if you wanted one. They looked real.

I asked my buddy why they allowed the sale of something that could easily be mistaken for the real thing. They looked perfect for use in armed robbery. And since most cops in the UK were unarmed at the time, pretty safe for the perps too.
