Chicago grew by about 50,000 residents over the last decade, according to 2020 U.S. Census data released Thursday.

The decennial population count put Chicago’s total at 2,746,388 residents — a 1.9% increase over the 2010 total. The Chicago number was revealed during a Washington news conference. More detailed county and regional data is expected later Thursday.

Chicago’s gain in population is a stark contrast to the previous decade, when the the city lost 200,000 residents — a 6.9% decrease.

The drop from 2000 to 2010 was fueled largely by a 17% decrease in the number of Black residents, many of whom left neighborhoods on the South and West Sides. Chicago’s white population decreased slightly over that decade while its Latino population grew 3%.

Observing from 150 miles away, I could never understand why there were so many people there anyway.

Lousy weather
High taxes
Expensive cost of living
Huge underclass
Awful traffic

Nearly the entire downstate area has hemorrhaged residents (including us)due to a poor economy, high taxes to feed Chicago, and a worsening social climate.

Nice beaches for a short, short window of the year. And the sausage, pepperoni and onion pies. I'm Sirius.

50,000 gain between 2010 and 2020.
200,000 left between 2020 and 2021.

Deep dish? A relative recently moved back to the Chicago area, and when my wife and I went to see their new place, they bought a thin crust from Lou Malanti’s. I guess they were gone long enough to forget that you get deep dish from there, not thin crust. Oh, well.

I meet a lot of Hispanics here in Florida who lived in Chicago. That seems to be a common pit stop before they fan out elsewhere in the country.

We are about 80 miles away. Daughter and her fiancé live and work there.
They are planning on buying a house in the suburbs eventually.

Anyone who has been Downtown in Pre-Covid years could see the 1000’s of new apartments/condo’s being built.

The old industrial area of the Chicago River is now brand new high rises apartment buildings. And the Condo’s are very expensive!

The wife and I left for TN 4 1/2 yrs ago to be close to our youngest son and his family. About halfway between Mt Vernon and Marion, on i-57, there was a state trooper in the middle watching southbound traffic. I think I read his mind as he watched me drive by in the rented 29’ uhaul: “well, there goes another one.”
