CANBERRA/SYDNEY, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Australia's biggest city of Sydney recorded its deadliest day of the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday as troops and police set up roadblocks to limit the movement of people, while Melbourne faced a nightly curfew and a further two weeks of lockdown.
Sydney, which is in its eighth week of lockdown, is the epicentre of Australia's third COVID-19 wave that threatens to push the country's A$2 trillion ($1.5 trillion) economy into its second recession in as many years.
New South Wales state Premier Gladys Berejiklian said seven people in Sydney had died from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, surpassing the state's previous record daily toll from earlier this month.
Berejiklian said New South Wales had detected 478 infections, the highest one-day rise since the pandemic began.

Sydney has a population of about 5 million. I just looked it up.
The lockdown didn’t have any effect so it’s been extended.
Sydney has a population of 5.36 million. Based on that rate, it’ll only take 2,100 years to wipe out the city.

Given the population of NSW is 8.1 million I’m thinking these numbers aren’t that bad actually.

What’s going on in Australia is pure insanity. I’m guessing the only reason people are “putting up with it” is because, in reality, almost no one is complying with the mad mandates.
The more you lockdown, more will die.
If 1% of the city’s population dies in a year, that would be more than 50,000 deaths a year, an average of about 138 a day. Seven deaths would therefore be about 5% of the EXPECTED daily death total.
7 deaths in a city of 5,367,206.
If this went all year (365 x 7) you would have 2,555 deaths or .048% or 1 out of 2,101! and they lock up an entire city!
