Few countries have been battered so violently as Afghanistan.
It has been roiled for decades by a war that is expected to escalate in coming months as foreign forces withdraw. There's deepening hunger and starvation. A severe drought is expected to displace hundreds of thousands as summer heat intensifies
Then there's the pandemic.
In recent weeks, there's been an exponential rise in cases, even with limited testing. (The Ministry of Public Health reports there's just been over 500,000 tests since the start of the pandemic for a population of about 40 million.)
On June 16, there were 2,313 new cases, which the United Nations reports was "the highest number of new cases [in Afghanistan] recorded in a single day since the onset of the pandemic."

Did they forget to mention Global Warming?
I loathe NPR.
L
Drought and summer heat are code for climate change
Yeah, that’s A-stan’s biggest problem right now...
Thousand and thousand of Afghanistan people and NO face masks. Where is the NEWS? No COVID reporting! OOPS!
I laughed out loud at your post
I am hoping the taliban get hit hard with Covid.
They seem to have other worries than the kungflu.
Clearly, these people were disease free before COVID. Now, their deaths will a be with COVID.
Defund NPR.
Of course, when the Chinese Communist PLA occupies Afghanistan after the departure and/or liquidation of all the Great Satan elements and their lackeys. there shall be this reservoir of disease built up to again infect the Chinese soldiers as they move about the country.
Regardless of how ruthless the PLA may be, their chances of subjugating the Afghanistan land mass are very low, judging from past empires that have invaded and sunk a great deal of blood, toil, time and treasure into the enterprise, only to come up, once again, empty.
Cry me a River, you chose this over Freedom.
Severe drought
... deepening hunger & starvation
... ... exploding pandemic numbers
Well, I don’t know about that.
The numbers they are citing seem pretty darn low.
Population of 40,000,000 people.
... but only 2,313 cases in Jun 16 (geez, that’s a while back author for a July 2 article!!!)
Oh no, 42% of those tested are positive... But wait, ‘testing is very, very low. Only 500,000 tests since the start of the pandemic. So they are only testing the very sick.
Wow, they expanded their hospital beds by 30... from 120 to 150. That is not much of an expansion.
Taliban has the cure for Covid: beheadings
I hope so as well.
A MOAB would be good too.
“Cases” lol.
Dear NPR: Nobody gives a crap.
The End.
And Womyn’s issues!
Yes because dying from COVID is in the top 10 of fears for the average Afghanistan citizen (sarc).
I do not believe this. Not because it is impossible or even implausible, but simply because it’s NPR.
