Pa. state workers in health care and ‘high risk’ settings must be vaccinated or tested

Pennsylvania state workers who are employed in health care facilities or other “high-risk” settings will be required to get vaccinated or be tested weekly for COVID-19, Gov. Tom Wolf said Tuesday.

The move affects 25,000 state workers, the Wolf administration said.

The requirement covers state employees working in 24-hour state facilities including state hospitals, state homes for people with intellectual disabilities, veterans homes, community health centers and state correction institutions.

Those workers will need to be vaccinated by Sept. 7 or they will undergo weekly coronavirus tests.

“It is our responsibility to do our part to protect our most vulnerable neighbors and stop the spread of this highly contagious virus,” Wolf said.

Wolf also announced another incentive to get more state workers vaccinated. In addition, the governor also announced that starting Oct. 1, state employees who get vaccinated will get a day off from work.

“Get the vaccine and you protect yourself and you set up this community shield,” Wolf said.

Wolf said he didn’t have a figure on how many state workers are vaccinated.

For those state workers required to get vaccinated or tested, most employees will be able to be given COVID-19 tests at their workplaces. Employees will not have to pay to be tested.

Statewide, about 64% of adults are fully vaccinated and nearly 80% have had at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine. But Wolf said more people need to get vaccinated. He pointed out the effectiveness of the vaccines, particularly in keeping people from ending up in the hospital. Nationwide, health officials have said the vast majority of those hospitalized are those who have not been vaccinated.

“We have no reason to be complacent. We have to keep working,” Wolf said.

In a news conference in Harrisburg, Wolf was asked if Pennsylvania would require school children to wear masks. On Tuesday, Delaware Gov. John Carney announced students in K-12 schools would be required to wear masks. New Jersey has previously said kids would need to wear masks in schools.

While Wolf said his administration strongly encourages schools to have students wear masks, he isn’t making it mandatory statewide. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending students wear masks in K-12 schools, regardless of their vaccination status.

“The Pennsylvania Department of Education is strongly recommending that they follow the CDC guidelines,” Wolf said.

The state is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. There are now 847 patients being treated in hospitals for COVID-19, up from about 250 just one month ago. More than 2,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the state Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health said.

Doesn’t matter, Tom. As we enter Fall and people shift to the indoors, what we’re seeing today in Texas & Florida will arrive up here. And you know what? It doesn’t matter because the death-rates are what is important, not the infection rates.

Eleven alleged COVID deaths in the past 24 hours.

More by motor vehicle accidents.

Or tested...

Nice out.

Note that John and Jane Q Private Sector aren’t afforded the same choice.

Individual tragedies to be sure, and I’m sorry for their families. But there will never be ‘zero-risk’ from viral infections or freak car-accidents. And the societal cost-shifting going on reached objectionable levels about a year ago.

I totally agree.

Those who desire a risk-free existence are delusional.

It is sheer hubris to imagine that mortals can “eliminate the virus”.

Why? They’ve gone 1 1/2 years without the vax why is it so important now?

Is there any data showing a high rate of cases and deaths among health care workers?

Is there any data showing a high rate of passing CV-19 to others from health care workers?

I don’t know about the first question but I suspect the answer to the 2nd question is a firm “No!”

This is a wounded governor seeking relevancy since his wings were clipped by the voters and the legislature. I suspect the political game here is simply to support the collapsing COVID narrative so that they can keep the mail-in voting scam going thru the mid-term election and possibly further.

Will they be testing with the PCR nasal swab test that the CDC has said isn’t accurate, because it can’t distinguish between the flu, and Covid?

‘...so that they can keep the mail-in voting scam going thru the mid-term election and possibly further.’

mail in voting a scam...? tell that to the five states that have used it primarily for several election cycles...

mail in voting is what the electorate clamored for because of politicians shutting things down; if you have a problem with the system, blame we the people...and btw, it is here to stay, so you may as well learn to use it to your advantage...

"More by motor vehicle accidents."

And likely more by cancer and heart disease.

I don’t doubt your analysis of his motives. A lot of that political calculation going around these days. A lot more than usual in fact.

I like to throw out question that require actually following science in hopes that questions like that become more common. It’s past time to bury these self-aggrandizing politicians in demands for fact-based answers. The media will never do it.

Nobody demanded mail-in voting. The legislature gave that to us, the Governor & PA courts illegally revised and extended it far beyond the legislature’s original intent.

It can be rolled back. It won’t be all-at-once, but at least they can attack the portions that allowed the ‘independent interest groups’ to bundle votes and dump them into un-monitored drop boxes.

A return to normal absentee balloting rules would be my personal preference. Request the ballot, it gets sent to your registered address, you fill it out an mail it to your precinct.
