Coe says climate change could affect sports calendars
The Associated Press ^ | August 8, 2021 | By GRAHAM DUNBAR (D-AP)

TOKYO — The effects of climate change will force sports bodies to rethink their calendar of events, World Athletics president Sebastian Coe said Sunday.

Coe, a two-time Olympic champion, was speaking on the final day of the Tokyo Games. The extreme heat and humidity in Japan forced changes to the track schedule, as well as tennis and women’s soccer.

“You don’t have to be a devotee of climate change or a denier to know the world is getting hotter,” Coe said. “It probably will mean a global discussion around the calendar and how we stage events.”

At the 2019 worlds, the sight of runners failing to finish the marathons helped persuade the International Olympic Committee to change its plans for Tokyo for the long-distance races.

“The reality of it is, I think this a challenge we are all going to confront now,” said Coe, who is an IOC member.

“If you are going to be intellectually coherent here, we are going to have to have that debate,” Coe said, predicting sports bodies will be ”revisiting what is possible and probably having to be more adaptable in future.”

One of Track’s greats. I’ll ignore him as a futurist.

Ah, one of N required daily demonstrations that there are people out there who really struggle to get two digits on their IQ.

This obviously includes our media.

Who knew it would get hot in Japan in the summer? I live in Minnesota and was shocked, shocked to note some hot days here this summer. That only happens in 100 out of every 100 years.

Sadly, it’s wokeness and transgenderism, not climate change, that has effected sports calendars.....

Oh, the women in this year’s Olympic marathon finished at a rate of about 83 percent. Under the extreme Japanese humidity, that’s a great ratio. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke risk can be compelling. The men were about 70 percent, still not bad considering that a marathon is not just a race but a physical ordeal. Had the race been in San Diego or Colorado Springs or Stockholm, I expect there still would have been dropouts. Those best prepared would still not have been among them.

According to NOAA, global temperatures have risen about 1 degree Fahrenheit since Sebastian Coe was in his running prime.

If 1 degree is enough to impact athletic performance, they might have to start events 15 minutes earlier in the morning. The horror!

Looked it up, just because: https://nbc-2.com/weather/weather-blog/2021/08/06/heat-humidity-and-tropical-storms-the-weather-and-tokyos-olympic-games/

Back in 1964, Tokyo was the host city of the Olympic Games but because of the normal weather conditions at the time, organizers made the decision to hold the summer games in autumn between October 10th and October 24th.

This year, the games were held in August. Is that because of climate change, or because in 1964 people were smarter?

Maybe there was a schedule conflict with the penis festival.

Hey GRAHAM DUNBAR (D-AP) - stop with the crystal ball reading... TELL US ONE TIME A ‘CLIMATE CHANGE’ ACTUALLY CHANGED ANYTHING.

Oh, and hurricanes? They’ve been with us for thousands of years... and NO they are NOT more frequent or larger.

GRAHAM DUNBAR (D-AP) you’re ‘end of the world’ crap is stupid. You don’t belong at the AP/...

I wouldn't have put it like that, but I agree. :-)

They were smarter back in those days.

Other than maybe during an ice age, has there ever been a time when Tokyo had nice weather in the summer?

The games [Tokyo 1964] were scheduled for mid-October to avoid the city's midsummer heat and humidity and the September typhoon season.[6] The previous Olympics in Rome in 1960 started in late August and experienced hot weather. The following games in 1968 in Mexico City also began in October.

In those days one learned from bad experiences. Obviously, the Olympic Committee is unable to read the calendar these days.

The extreme heat and humidity in Japan forced changes to the track schedule, as well as tennis and women’s soccer.

The extreme heat and humidity is caused by a climatological phenomenon called summer.

Climate Change is a Worldwide Business Plan the Left and the Right are pawns expected to fight each other about it while the “Moderates” inside the governments implement it.

Taxes on energy and car use fund government with little people hit hardest and business avoids taxation directly with schemes like “carbon credits” to protect them.

Greta Thunberg is just a tool for others who want a world that is profitable for them like solar panel makers, windmill makers and the electric car barons like Elon Musk.
