Denver woman severely burned by pressure cooker device that was later recalled due to injuries

DENVER — Georgina Barela was attempting to make beans in a pressure cooker device when the lid flew off, leaving her with second-degree and third-degree burns on her face, arms and chest.

"The way the pressure cooker was sitting ... it hit the cupboard and it ricocheted from there," Barela explained as she described the impact of the lid flying across her kitchen, sending hot liquid everywhere.

"It exploded, and after that was kind of like a blur. Everything happened so fast," Barela said.

Thousands of endurance athletes prepare to compete in Boulder despite poor air quality Barela said the pain was immediate and unlike anything she has ever experienced before. Her mother rushed to the kitchen to help her and called 911. Once at the hospital, she learned the burns were severe.

The treatment and recovery process lasted more than a year. During that time, doctors used five square feet of cadaver skin grafts to treat the burned areas.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the multi-cooker is still able to pressurize when the lid is not fully locked, which can cause the lid to suddenly become separated from the device. The CPSC found this poses a potential burn risk when hot foods or liquids escape from the device.

Denver-based law firm Burg Simpson recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of Barela, citing the incident where her Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker exploded in June 2019. The product was later recalled in November 2020.

"They’re basically cooking with a potential time bomb," said attorney Michael Burg.

More information on the recall is available here. It involves the Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker, model number SCCPPC600-V1. The recalled model was manufactured between July 1, 2017 and October 1, 2018. Anyone who has one of these devices is asked to stop using it immediately in the pressure cooker mode but can continue using it for slow cooking and sautéing.

"The thing that I found to be outrageous is they know and knew for almost two years that people were being burned by their product and what did they do? They continued to sell it, to make money," Burg said.

The CPSC received 119 reports of lid detachment that resulted in 99 burn injuries. The injuries ranged from first-degree to third-degree burns.

Customer reviews that were posted on several websites where the device was sold warn about this very issue. One woman wrote a review on Amazon in July 2018 stating that her multi-cooker exploded: "Would not recommend to anyone!!! IT BLEW UP!" Another woman wrote in February 2018 that her daughter suffered second-degree burns as a result of a malfunction.

Burg wonder why a recall was not issued sooner, especially as additional complaints involving started coming in.

"Had they done so, my client would never have purchased it and would have never been burned," Burg said.

When I was a young child, the pressure cooker in which my mom was making apple sauce, blew its lid and forcefully sent the lid and boiling hot apple sauce onto her face, etc. I remember the scream from the kitchen and the sight when she ran out of the kitchen and her phoning my dad at work and his rushing home to take her to the hospital. No way was I ever, ever going buy a pressure cooker - no way, no how - even though people have told me that the ones today are safe/safer.

To read that this is happening today and happening often is awful and suggests that whatever those newer standards were that supposedly made them safer have been abandoned or skimping happened in the parts and/or assembly by whoever created the design and quality of the safety mechanism.

Surely it’s not a surprise that these “modern,” “safe” ones were manufactured in China, as shown on the photo of the label on the page of the recall notice. https://recall.crock-pot.com/

That same thing happens when the mash in your still clogs the chiller coil.

Life is an adventure.

I have an instant pot that I’ve only used once and I am nowhere near ready to give up on it. I suspect most of the accidents are due to operator error.

I read one of the articles and it said the devices are supposed to have safety features that protect against the user by not allowing the appliances to be opened when then there is pressure on it. No one should be allowed to use a pressure cooker who doesn’t know that removing the lid while the pot still has pressure on it is very dangerous. Unfortunately some of them aren’t idiot-proof. There are two ways to relieve pressure on it. Either allow it to release the pressure on it. One is to allow the cooker to do it automatically, the other is to do it manually. You can tell when the unit still has pressure because there is a pop-up on the top of the lid that tells you.

I believe the pressure on these pots go up to somewhere around 10 psig. For 25 years I worked in a power plant where we produced steam at 900 psig so 10 psig does not sound like a lot of pressure, but as we can see, 10 psig is sufficient to cause serious injuries.

So, the lesson is, don’t try to open a pot that still has pressure on it.

” Either allow it to release the pressure on it.”

I left out the word “automatically” at the end of that sentences. Oops, my apologies .

Once again we see a company in China buy the rights to an American brand, and start shoving crap out the door under its name.

It is all about the Benjamins, and there are plenty of CEOs that willingly prostitute an old brand for a few bucks.

Bell & Howell, Curtis Mathes and now, Crock Pot.

There’s a difference between these multi-cooker/instant pot cookers —which are not recommended for pressure canning—even though the instruction booklet may have such directions.

Reason is the manufacturers have not done the testing that is required to establish the safety of the product produced, and do not meet the guidelines established by the USDA.

If you are going to pressure can food, use a product made in the USA - not China:

https://www.allamericancanner.com/

The All American Pressure Canner is the only pressure canner that forms a metal to metal seal eliminating the need for lid gasket replacement.

The All American Canner offers large capacity canning to make pressure canning your meats, vegetables and fruits easy. Prepare large quantities of food quickly and fork tender. Cleanup is a breeze.

Having worked in a power plant run by steam I’m too afraid to ever buy a pressure cooker! I’ve leaned on insulated 16’ pipes only to have them bounce around from the water hammer phenomenon.

Bah.
In the seventies I worked in a chemistry lab that was built in the 30s to 1890s standards. We could make anything blow up. The ceiling was often mistaken for a Jackson Pollock.
Kids these days.

If you’ll pardon the pun - - - This is a crock.

I had that exact model. It had an interlock that the engineers thought was idiot-proof. But the world keeps breeding better idiots. I suppose you could had made it be dangerous if you failed to lock the lid all the way. The instructions told you how verify that, and she obviously didn’t. Apparently defeating the interlock.

I used mine 3-4 times a week, making everything from rice to vegetable soup to hard-boiling eggs to steaming sausages. As did tens of thousands of other users, with no trouble.

Mine finally died early this year. I think a lightning surge burned out the electronics.

I immediately bought another one, same model. It probably has a more idiot-proof interlock. I haven’t bothered to look. I’m too busy using it.

What a horrible accident. It almost sounds like she was attacked with Napalm. This is still happening in 2021 not in some silent Buster Keaton movie.
I’ll just stick with my large and trusty Stew Pot, exploring the joys of slow cooking.

Here is the common thread per Mercola.

Big Pharma and mainstream media are largely owned by two asset management firms: BlackRock and Vanguard.

Vanguard and BlackRock are the top two owners of Time Warner, Comcast, Disney and News Corp, four of the six media companies that control more than 90% of the U.S. media landscape.

BlackRock and Vanguard form a secret monopoly that own just about everything else you can think of too. In all, they have ownership in 1,600 American firms, which in 2015 had combined revenues of $9.1 trillion. When you add in the third-largest global owner, State Street, their combined ownership encompasses nearly 90% of all S&P 500 firms.

Vanguard is the largest shareholder of BlackRock. Vanguard itself, on the other hand, has a unique structure that makes its ownership more difficult to discern, but many of the oldest, richest families in the world can be linked to Vanguard funds

“Throw out any pressure cooker you have. They blow up.”

Yes, remove any stove or range you may have. They get HOT!.

Remove all fans from your home. Those spinning blades will amputate fingers, toes & noses!

Perhaps if you had ever canned food from your garden or the farmers market, or used a pressure cooker to sterilize medical instruments in the bush in Africa, you might not be so dogmatic about that.

Yep. I operate a gourmet mushroom farm. We use All American pressure cookers (5) to sterilize grain to make our seed spawn. I often have five cookers going at once. All American canners are top shelf. I wouldn't even consider using a Mirro or other cheapo Chinese brand.
