Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia indicated on Saturday he would not back including an extension of federal aid for gig workers and long-term unemployed Americans past Labor Day in a Democrat-only package.
"I'm done with extensions," he told Insider. "The economy is coming back."
Manchin went on: "Look guys, read your own print. Read your own print. The economy is stronger now, the job market is stronger. Nine million jobs we can't fill. We're coming back."
The West Virginia senator's opposition would effectively kill the renewal of those federal aid programs, given all 50 Senate Democrats need to back the party-line bill for it to clear the upper chamber. Democrats are drafting the initial bill, which will pass through the reconciliation process requiring only a simple majority vote sometime this fall.
Nearly 9.4 million people are currently receiving benefits through a pair of pandemic-era federal initiatives: Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), which expanded benefit eligibility to gig workers…

Manchin is an actor playing games.
Support the 4.5 Trillion Social Engineering boondoggle, and oppose a small plan extension.
It’s a continuation of Manchin screwing the peeps of WVA.
.
He’s just trying to up his bribe. I hear his wife got a big haul for the “infrastructure” bill vote.
Manchin is a circus seal signaling he wants fish.
Lol !! You win ‘word picture of the day’ !!
[”The economy is coming back.”]
Oh yes, it’s a era of peace and security and prosperity!
I’m really enjoying paying $2.89/gal for gas that was $2.17/gal when Biden took office. Soooooo glad Biden cancelled Keystone Pipeline.
Just wait until tens of thousands are thrown out of work for not taking the vaccine
Biden will just approve it by default.
Pretty cheap compared to 3.25 I’m paying in IL
Yeah I’m sure - then there’s California
Manchin is a broken clock that isn’t even right once a day . . .
Even if he votes against it, we all know there will be a couple of deflectors from our side, and as mentioned above, he’s probably playing poker,, hoping to up the ante and get something bigger as a payoff.
Well the improved numbers were because a lot of states let the extensions sunset at the end of June. Thereby forcing many to look for work.
But as an employer myself, as I suspected, the quality of worker is grossly subpar for even the most menial of positions.
Even amongst my fellow business owners with the “delta dawn” surge, we’ve slowed our efforts to hire. We have already been discussing and planning for a shutdown right after Labor Day.
Which for many gig workers or independent contractors would throw them back into financial crisis, just when many had finally started being able to put capital back into the business coffers. Also another shutdown would force a reopening with vaccine mandates and passports.
Of course this is very clearly the playbook. As I have told a few folks: Make hay today, for tomorrow there is rain.
DHS is talking about “trump supporters becoming violent in August 2021” but they have nothing specific. It won’t be Trump folks, it will be the general populace having their means of livelihood crushed under the jackboot of a shutdown all the while the government tries to blame the unvaccinated.
Bookmark this thread. I am saying after Labor Day, but could happen just before the holiday.

They won’t be given unemployment.
the jab will be a condition of collecting it.
Good thing us Mountaineers have Republican Senator Capito to cancel out Joe's vote.
Wait...What??
Think about it. If Sinema and Manchin decide to vote for the filibuster. Our country is done. All those house bills waiting at the senate would be passed with 50 votes. I’m thankful to both of them myself.
