With a total of 835,792 Israelis known to have recovered from the virus, the 72 instances of reinfection amount to 0.0086% of people who were already infected with COVID.
By contrast, Israelis who were vaccinated were 6.72 times more likely to get infected after the shot than after natural infection, with over 3,000 of the 5,193,499, or 0.0578%, of Israelis who were vaccinated getting infected in the latest wave.

The CDC officially changed the definition of Herd Immunity the other day.

Having had covid is no longer contributing to herd immunity.
Either natural immunity or immunity from full vaccination will very effectively provide protection from severe COVID-19. IMHO, natural immunity is likely to be somewhat “broader”.
At this point we have numerous studies demonstrating that natural immunity works. Just one of them was from the Cleveland Clinic, a very well respected institution. However, the whole science behind natural immunity is completely ignored by our government.
Ignored? Suppressed is more like it. Same for treatment.
How pathetic that we need to find these numbers from the Israeli Health Ministry whilst our corrupt CDC buries such relevant stats.

Yeah... somewhat... the body takes a ginsu to the virus and targets the 26 or 27 or so proteins the viral RNA makes in the recovered. The Vax targets 1, and not all that well.

I’ll defer to experts in the field but I’d say that a natural infection and recovery trains the body to kill more than just through identifying the spike protein. If the virus mutates enough to alter the spike protein then these vaccines may fail miserably against those mutations whereas natural infection knows more ways to kill the virus. They are already hinting at such an eventuality - which others had brought up in the past but were widely censored, banned, mocked etc. Booster shots, 3rd jab, reformulated versions etc are all in the works or even being rolled out in some parts of the world.

How can this be determined if most everyone in Israel was “protected” by the vax?
Suppressed is right. 100+ years of immunology tossed out the window. But it is hard to suppress what people already know to be true. They will just try to trick people into denying what they know.
They can use data from people who were previously infected, before the vaccines. And not everyone is vaccinated though it is a large percentage of their adult population.
Anyone who thinks that a synthetic man made shot can out perform a naturally derived anti-body is a fool. Who can improve on God our creators work , no man.
Protection from natural immunity is much broader. The immunity, or at least protection from serious symptoms, provided by the vaccine is delivered via a single type of antibody, narrowly focused on only the spike protein, and on the spike from the old, original strain of the virus. So the vaccine is very narrow in its approach, and is aimed at a strain of the virus that no longer exists, and which has been replaced by new strains that the vaccine is less able to combat.
By contrast, our natural immune system has multiple layers, that produce a wide variety of different types of antibodies, not just one. It has both systems that are adaptive, which identify antigens and adapt to kill them, and systems that are innate, which have been programmed from before birth to attack ANY type of antigen, even those it has not encountered before.

I think the business of variants was brought up last summer, when the promise of mRNA treatments started getting in the news. But I seem to remember that it was also suggested that the mRNA has the advantage of being quickly and easily modifiable to deal with new variants, as they become dominant. Just tweak a couple of nucleotides to handle the new sorts of spikes. Haven’t seen any of that, so far, though.
