Sailor who 'hated the Navy' accused of destroying $1 billion naval assault ship

The U.S. Navy's leadership has drawn a lot of criticism for its wokester focus as its mission goes fallow.

Now we're seeing this report:

Just before a fire started on a warship that burned for nearly five days in San Diego last summer, a witness told investigators he saw a fellow sailor โ€” known to his leadership for showing disdain toward the Navy โ€” walking to the spot where the blaze first ignited.

Ryan Sawyer Mays, a 20-year-old from Kentucky, carried a metal bucket into the vesselโ€™s lower storage area, according to new court documents identifying him as the person accused of destroying the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard. Navy officials announced last week that a sailor had been charged with aggravated arson and willful hazarding of a vessel in connection to the July 2020 fire, but they did not publicly identify the suspect.

Mays is not only accused of intentionally setting the blaze, but also of tampering with fire-safety equipment on the ship and crime-scene evidence in an attempt to hinder the federal investigation, according to documents filed in the Southern California U.S. District Court and unsealed Tuesday.

When these degenerates get into a face-clawing fight with one of their “lovers” they always take it out on others and society at large. The homo Amtrak pilot, if you don’t remember from several years ago, wrecked a train loaded with passengers killing several and injuring hundreds by driving it over 100 mph into a sharp turn. He claimed he “blacked out.”

God bless you Chief for watching over him. We had a similar sailor in my squadron. He was a good sailor but not so smart and very naive. We never let him go to the flight deck alone and someone was always with him on liberty.

Many have reported average or below average pilot.
I give him high regard for his time as a POW, wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

I think he was a weaselly SOB as a politician and I wish following Hew Hampshire in 2000 he had never been in office!

Promote the guy to admiralโ€”he would probably be better than most of the woke perfumed crowd we have now...

He's already destroyed a warship. How many of the current top brass can make the same claim?

Hopefully, he’ll find a couple decades in Leavenworth far more to his liking. /s

I expect this individual to be breaking big rocks into small rocks, and then having his 'roommate' get his rocks off at Fort Leavenworth for a very long time.

If you kicked out every Junior Sailor that said, “The Navy sucks! I hate the Navy!” there wouldn’t be anyone left.

***********

True that. LOL

Snarky bitching and griping about the “Navy way” is one thing, and can even be considered as “situation normal”, however deep seated anti-military sentiment is an altogether different attitude which superiors should be on the watch for. It’s more than just a morale issue; its also about readiness.

Senior petty officers know what’s going on within the ranks and can sense toxic/destructive behavior. Its their responsibility to report it up the chain of command because it has the potential to put the mission and everyone at risk.

I was on the AMERICA CV 66. Yeah I knew how to make a ship go D.I.W. but quickly reversible. All Machinist Mates, Boiler Techs, and Fire Dept, knew where the emergency fuel cut off switches were. Activating one without Chief Engineers or Captains orders unless it was warranted by your qualified opinion to do so was a Court Martial offense.

It was safety switches located outside the boiler rooms to save lives in the event of a boiler room disaster. All Snipes {engineering /propulsion crew know this information. Yes if someone got mad they {might} get away with tripping them but would have a major butt kicking coming there way before the MAA's took perp to the Captain. I was a Machinist Mate and a Fire Fighter on the ships fire department.

For what it's worth I was involved in a fire investigation and likely suspect simply because I found a fire in a storage locker while I was on Fire Dept and was off duty. I smelled the smoke and touched the hatch of the suspected space and it was hot.

I had access to all spaces because I was on FD and it was in the shipyard. I had to have access to do safety walk throughs assigned me. When I discovered the fire I ran to the QD because the ships phones were out, and did the fire bell call from the 1MC there. IIRC I identified myself so the guy at the DC desk would know it was not a prank. Later that night or the next morning I was in the N.I.S. office being questioned.

I never thought anymore about it till we left the yards and we had an inspection on the flighdeck. I was supposed to be on watch and Chief took me off and said you gotta go to inspection the Captain wants to see you. About 45 of us were given Letters of Commendation. That was the biggest fire in my years onboard. It transfered heat from the Hanger Deck to the 03 level. After I had called the fire out I went up to the fire department berthing area and geared up to do OBA investigating of adjoining spaces near the fire. We hosed the ships Barber Shop because the floor tiles were bucking form the fire two decks below.

AS for Fire Bugs on a ship? Hang their sorry hides. Go to Youtube and watch Trial By Fire a Navy training film. That fire in that film was real but accidental. I'm not gonna mention the ships name because some nutjobs who know nothing about carriers will start up their favorite conspiracy theory that has been disproven and debunked time and time again.

A bitchin’ sailor is a happy sailor... at least, that was the saying when I was in the Navy.

I don’t think I’d recognize it now, though.

It's not just the Navy but all military services, albeit this is an extreme case.

I know back when I was serving, the recruiters were under a lot of pressure to produce new service members and would go to extremes to make sure they passed muster to make the grade. Even my wife, who was career Air Force, got in only because her recruiter used to take her out to big meals all of the time because she was a small, skinny little thing. She was only 95 lbs and needed to be 105 libs to get in. So he put the lbs on her. She didn't create any problems though.

But I had this little gal in my hospital squadron who was assigned to do security clearances for the security police squadron. I kept getting complaints from the cops that they couldn't get their paperwork processed. My first sgt and I would go talk to her and she said she understood the urgency and would smile and shake her head that she would try harder. Well, she went on leave one time and we discovered piles of unprocessed clearance applications buried in the bottom of her desk. When she got back we confronted her and discovered she didn' t know how to read past the fourth grade level. Her recruiter had cheated and took the entry tests for her and she was just bumbling along, smiling like he told her to do. She was discharged right away.

But destroying a billion dollar plus ship is a little over the top. I hope he pays for it heavily.

Itโ€™s Forrestal, and that story is a myth.

Indeed it is a myth and a stupid conspiracy theory. Those saying otherwise are calling several hundred flight deck crew Liars. His plane spot was on film and the missile launch as well. People can hate McCain all they want. I didn't like him. But there is no way in hell he started that fire and even the FD camera footage along with the plane spotting charts prove he could not have done it. He did what he was supposed to do which was get below. Why? Because he was a pilot. Pilots are not ship board firefighters.

Thank for the reply:
Fire underway should be any sailor’s nightmare.
Absolutely no where to go!

Hope you’re doing well.
